These five lots look set to sparkle at the Arqana October Sale
Ollie O'Donoghue runs the rule over the four-day auction
With a stellar catalogue unveiled for this year's Arqana October Sale, which takes place in Deauville from Tuesday to Friday, Ollie O'Donoghue picks out five standout lots who look set to sparkle across the four days of trade.
The first two sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday start at 3pm local time, while business will commence at 2pm local time on Thursday and at 11am local time on Friday.
The October Sale will coincide with three days of racing across the road from the sales ground at Deauville racecourse from Tuesday to Thursday.
The auction is comprised of 609 well-bred yearlings, with over €18 million in turnover recorded at each of the past three renewals.
Lot 36
Sea The Stars-Wiwilia (Konigstiger)
Haras de l'Hotellerie
Among the pricier yearlings at last year's October Sale was the €250,000 Sea The Stars colt out of Amarysia, and the sire's draft this time around includes Haras de l'Hotellerie's half-brother to the Group 1-winning juvenile filly Wonderment.
The May-foaled offering has seen further updates to his pedigree with Wonderment second to Edisa in the Jockey Club Oaks at Belmont Park in September and Arc winner Waldgeist appearing underneath his third dam.
The distinguished half-brothers Galileo and Sea The Stars were responsible for three of the six winners on British Champions Day, with the former responsible for the Champion Stakes heroine Magical and Long Distance Cup scorer Kew Gardens, and the latter coming up trumps with the Fillies and Mares Stakes winner Star Catcher.
48
Pedigree Galileo-Amicus (Fastnet Rock)
Consignor Haras des Capucines
One of five Galileo yearlings listed in the catalogue, this colt from Haras des Capucines is the first foal out of the Australian Thousand Guineas winner Amicus.
The Coolmore-bred youngster hails from the family of resurgent stallion Starspangledbanner, whose daughter Millisle captured the Cheveley Park Stakes in September.
What is more, the January-foaled colt is bred on the Galileo-Fastnet Rock cross, the reverse of which has produced seven elite winners led by the 2015 Oaks heroine Qualify.
Two other Galileo yearlings with Australasian roots are Haras de l'Hotellerie's son of Sea Siren (lot 12), a three-time Group 1 winner in Australia by Fastnet Rock, and Fairway Consignment's son of the Iffraaj mare Fix (81), a three-time Group 2 scorer in New Zealand.
Style Vendome-Lady Glitters (Homme De Loi)
Elevage de Tourgeville
Antoine Lepeudry's Elevage de Tourgeville has two siblings to Group 1 winners in its ranks, including this Style Vendome half-sister to the Queen Anne Stakes scorer Lord Glitters.
The March-born filly hails from the fourth crop of French Guineas winner Style Vendome, whose second-drop daughter Lily's Candle captured the Prix Marcel Boussac last season.
That forms a neat tie-in as Tourgeville, which sold Lord Glitters at the October Sale, will also offer a May-foaled half-sister to Lily's Candle (lot 93) by first-crop sire Dariyan earlier in the session.
135
Galileo-Native Force (Indian Ridge)
La Motteraye Consignment
This Galileo colt from La Motteraye Consignment stands out on paper as a half-brother to the dual Group 1-winning sprinter Kingsgate Native, who struck in the Nunthorpe at two and the Golden Jubilee Stakes a year later.
Galileo has gelled well with speedy pedigrees before, with his top-class sons Frankel and Noble Mission out of the dual Listed-winning sprinter Kind, and the Group 1-winning siblings Churchill and Clemmie out of the Listed-winning juvenile sprinter Meow.
Another Coolmore-bred youngster, the April-born colt is bred on the same Galileo-Indian Ridge cross as the Irish 1,000 Guineas heroine Nightime and Beresford Stakes scorer David Livingston.
Anna Sundstrom's Colounces Sales is responsible for the fifth and final Galileo yearling in the catalogue, an April-foaled half-brother to the King George winner and sire Novellist (lot 139).
Le Havre-Platonic (Zafonic)
Ecurie des Monceaux
One family whose members have become synonymous with the Arqana sales ring is the brood of Ecurie des Monceaux and Skymarc Farm's foundation mare Platonic, whose produce have sold for a combined €2.8 million in Deauville, including her Camelot colt who realised €210,000 from Jeremy Brummitt at last year's October Sale.
Since named English King, the unraced colt is in training with Ed Walker and is entered at Newmarket on Wednesday for owner Bjorn Nielsen.
Her latest foal, a May-foaled colt by Le Havre, will be sent into the ring by Ecurie des Monceaux as one of the last lots on day one, and he is in receipt of an update with his 'niece' Magic Wand having chased home Magical in second in the Irish Champion Stakes.
Platonic's Group 3-winning daughter Pacifique hit the headlines when her Dubawi colt, later named Prudenzia, topped the 2015 Arqana August Yearling Sale when hammered down to John Ferguson for €2.6m, while another of her daughters, Prudenzia, has produced eight yearlings who have sold for total receipts of €8.195m at the August Sale.
