Super run for Mehmas continues with two more notable victories

Just as became the case when he captured such attention during his record-breaking first crop year, Mehmas cannot stop siring two-year-old winners once again.

On Friday, the Tally-Ho stallion retained the Listed Rose Bowl Stakes at Newbury through Caturra, while early in the Irish Oaks card at the Curragh, his son Beauty Inspire maintained his unbeaten record with a professional performance in the Group 3 Jebel Ali Racecourse And Stables Anglesey Stakes.

Although the later Newbury success of Gubbass in the Weatherbys Super Sprint cannot be counted among a total of 14 black type winners and counting for Mehmas, it is a juvenile event of some repute and it would appear fairly likely that the Richard Hannon-trained victor will be adding his name to that slate at some point fairly soon.

Gubbass was not the cheapest individual in the line-up but is very much from a family where a bargain was to be had. The colt was bought by Charlie Gordon Watson Bloodstock for owner Jassim Bin Ali Al Attiyah for just £26,000 at last year's Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale when offered through Tally-Ho.

After his narrow debut success at Leicester and this narrow verdict over stable companion Symphony Perfect, his brief toils on the track have already earned him north of £100,000.

Gubbass was bred by Tom Lacy out of the unraced Lope De Vega mare Vida Amorosa, who had been through the ring a few times herself, most recently when bought for just €1,200 by Harry Cleary at the 2017 Goffs February Sale.

While Gubbass is her first foal, there were even better returns for her younger full-brother after Mehmas had continued his roll during the tail end of last season. Tally-Ho itself signed for the colt foal for €75,000 when he was offered through Ringfort Stud at the Goffs November Foal Sale.

Beauty Inspire is another to have rewarded those who hung their hats on Mehmas, whose fee has now more than doubled to €25,000. Tally-Ho paid £25,000 for him at the same sale from which Gubbass hailed, the youngster having been pinhooked for €10,000 by Cross Stables earlier in the year.

Withdrawn from the Tattersalls Guineas Breeze-Up and now in Hong Kong ownership, he was bred by Michael O'Mahony from a cheaply bought winning Zamindar mare named Darwell. O'Mahony has found himself a useful broodmare as Darwell has already produced The Last Lion colt Darwell Lion, a winner on his only start so far for Ellmarie Holden at Lingfield last December.
