Subjectivist could follow sibling right to the top after Listed Hamilton win

It does not look improbable that two siblings bought and trained by Mark Johnston could appear in consecutive St Legers following the encouraging victory of Subjectivist in the Listed Irish Stallion Farms EBF Glasgow Stakes at Hamilton on Thursday.

Last September, Sir Ron Priestley rose right through the ranks of handicappers to the Classics and earned his place in the Doncaster line-up by winning the March Stakes at Goodwood. He was beaten only by Logician on the big day.

Subjectivist has arrived in a very similar fashion, running in the same King George V Handicap at Royal Ascot and a valuable event at Haydock before his return to stakes company. Goodwood may well be on the agenda after the 7-4 favourite galloped a length and three-quarters clear in the typically no-nonsense style of one from his yard.

The pair were bred by Susan Hearn’s Mascalls Stud and are three-parts brothers as Sir Ron Priestley is by Australia and Subjectivist by fellow Galileo stallion Teofilo.

Johnston had bought Sir Ron Priestley for 70,000gns at Tattersalls Book 2 and at the same event 12 months later, he picked up Subjectivist for just 62,000gns. He is now in the ownership of Hong Kong-based Scotsman Dr Jim Walker.

They are the second and third foals out of Reckoning, a stakes-placed Danehill Dancer mare that Hearn bought for 160,000gns at the Tattersalls December Mare Sale in 2014.

From the stout family of Sholokhov and Soldier Of Fortune, she had a Muhaarar filly offered at Tattersalls last October and, unsurprisingly, Johnston stepped in again for 100,000gns.

Claiming his sixth win in the race, Johnston told Racing TV:"We’ve always thought an awful lot of him, we’ve got his half-brother Sir Ron Priestley, that we’ve always also thought a lot of, and he had a similar profile.

"In actual fact you’d normally say it's a bit premature with a horse who prior to today has been running in handicaps to start talking about possible St Leger bids and so on but this horse is actually higher rated than Sir Ron was at same time last year and he’s gone on to finish second in the St Leger. So it’s got to be a long-term target, or a long-ish term target."

Subjectivist is a general 33-1 chance at this stage.
