Sottsass Longchamp success a major update for sale-topping Dubawi half-sister
The filly realised €2.5 million when selling to agent Oliver St Lawrence
The victory of Sottsass in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe was not only consolation for the Coolmore partners who had bought a half-share in the Siyouni colt in January, but a coup for connections of the Starlet's Sister filly who took top lot honours at Arqana last month.
Third in the Longchamp showpiece last year, Sottsass showed plenty of grit in testing conditions to fend off German-bred Adlerflug colt In Swoop, with Kingman's son Persian King third ahead of the Outstrip-sired Gold Trip.
Siyouni is well established as one of Europe's leading stallions, with four individual Group 1 winners to his name, including the popular Laurens and this year's Poule d'Essai des Pouliches scorer Dream And Do, but Ecurie des Monceaux's Starlet's Sister is equally prolific as a producer.
The daughter of Galileo, whose first three foals are Pattern winners, also produced the brilliant Sistercharlie, winner of seven Grade 1s, including the 2018 Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf, while the Arc result provided a major update for her Dubawi filly, who realised €2.5 million when selling to agent Oliver St Lawrence and owner Fawzi Nass at Arqana.
Nass said after the purchase: "We know the buying power is there but it's difficult to put a value on the filly. Obviously the market has a strong appetite for a filly like that.
"Whether we've overpaid we'll find out, but I don't think so. They're scarce to come on the market."
A full-sibling to the 2020 Arc hero is due as Starlet's Sister returned to Haras de Bonneval for a date with Siyouni this year.
Wooded a wonderful result for Bassett
Wooded provided Coolmore's latest acquisition and red-hot sire Wootton Bassett with a third individual Group 1 winner when landing the Prix de l'Abbaye.
The Al Shaqab-owned three-year-old is out of Elusive City mare Frida La Blonde, making him a brother to the useful Beat Le Bon, placed in Group 3 company this term for Richard Hannon.
A €90,000 purchase from Arqana's October Sale, Wooded is from the immediate family of stakes winners Fred Lalloupet and Mon Pote Le Gitan.
Wootton Bassett was purchased from Haras d’Etreham in August, where he had sired among small numbers European champion Almanzor, and he has been represented this year by the unbeaten Dewhurst entry Chindit and Prix Jean Romanet scorer Audarya, who was third in the Prix de l'Opera.
Sealiway sails past rivals
Sealiway revelled in the ground to give last season's French champion first-season sire Galiway his first Group 1 winner in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere.
The third foal out of Listed-winning Kendargent mare Kensea, the €62,000 Arqana graduate won his first two starts before finishing third behind King's Harlequin at Longchamp. He then struck in Listed company before a second in the Prix la Rochette.
Galiway was a classy performer himself, notching a Listed win and placing twice in Group 3 company. The son of Galileo, a half-brother to Grade 2 winner Silent Name and Criterium International second Salto, stands at Haras de Colleville for €10,000. Also among his best progeny to date are Group 3 scorer Kenway and stakes winner Wanaway.
