Something for everyone at Arqana's Autumn Sale as buyers look for next National Hunt or Flat stars
Arqana's Autumn Sale bonanza is the next event on the conveyor belt of auctions in Europe – and it is one which has an impressive roll of honour.
Recent star performers to have sold, or at least been offered, at the event which starts on Monday include last season's Grand National hero I Am Maximus, brilliant Mares' Hurdle winner Lossiemouth, exciting Brown Advisory Novices' Chase winner Fact To File – who looks a bona fide 2025 Gold Cup hope for JP McManus and Willie Mullins – and multiple Grade 1-winning chaser El Fabiolo.
Flat performers of note to have been offered and/or sold include Beaute Cachee, winner of the Grade 1 Jenny Wiley Stakes at Keeneland in April, Make Me King, winner of the Group 3 Prix Quincey at Deauville in August, and Princess Badee, who won the Group 3 Hamburger Stutenpreis at Hamburg in July.
There are proven performers from the Flat and jumps among this year's entries, for example multiple black type-winning sprinter Go Athletico (lot 235) and Westminster Moon (427), who was Group 1-placed when third in the Grosser Dallmayr-Preis Bayerisches Zuchtrennen at Munich this summer. He cost just £15,000 at the Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale in 2021 and looks the sort who could command considerably more on Monday.
A wildcard entry, the smart son of Sea The Moon features alongside Listed Flat winners Kaneshya (454) and Newlook (443), plus AQPS Grade 2 bumper winner Jet Blue (455), also Grade 1-placed at Longchamp in September.
Drafts include those from Graffard Racing, Wertheimer, the Aga Khan Studs, Stephane Wattel, Fabrice Chappet and the retiring Pascal Bary.
As far as the breeding stock section on Thursday is concerned, a mare to note is Mind Sunday (810), a half-sister to dual Grade 1 winner Master Dino and Grade 3 winner Master D'Oc, the latter now a new sire at Haras de Toury.
The eight-year-old is carrying to the great Doctor Dino, meaning the resultant foal will be a close relation to those high-class performers.
The opening day is devoted to horses in training, with two-year-old stores and National Hunt-bred yearlings being sold over the next two days. The final day will see breeding stock go under the hammer.
The sale gets under way on Monday at 11am local time (10am GMT). The catalogue can be viewed here.
