Shadwell's Night Of Thunder colt tops Tattersalls February Sale at 175,000gns
The Shadwell and Godolphin consignments took centre stage on the first day
The opening day of the Tattersalls February Sale saw the Shadwell draft prove immensely popular, and Ballyhimikin Stud went to 175,000gns to pick up the Night Of Thunder weanling half-brother to Listed National Day Cup winner Moqtarreb and the dual Group 3-placed Khaloosy.
The April-born bay colt is out of the twice-raced Dalakhani mare Elshaadin, herself out of a winning daughter of the great Magnificient Style, the dam of Group 1 winners Nathaniel, Playful Act and Great Heavens, as well as Group winners Percussionist and Echoes In Eternity.
Anthony Stroud, speaking on behalf of Ballyhimikin Stud, said: “Night Of Thunder has done incredibly well and the dam has produced two stakes horses. We liked him as an individual and he heads to Ireland.
“He has a fantastic back pedigree and we hope he comes back next October and makes money!”
Moqtarreb has continued to perform with credit in the UAE for Erwan Charpy, most recently finishing fifth in the Zabeel Mile, while the dam could provide further updates as she has a two-year-old filly by the late Shamardal.
The well-bred Frankel mare Anasheed led the way earlier on in the session when selling to Blandford Bloodstock’s Richard Brown for 130,000gns, fetching the first six-figure sum of the day.
A winner for Owen Burrows as a three-year-old, Anasheed is out of the Listed winner and 1,000 Guineas third Hathrah, meaning she is a half-sister to John Musker Stakes winner and Prix de l’Opera third Hadaatha.
Brown said of the seven-year-old: “Obviously she’s by Frankel, the newly crowned champion sire, and she was a decent performer herself. She ran only three times but was rated 93, so it’s probably fair to say she could have been a stakes-calibre filly.”
Her first two foals, a two-year-old Siyouni colt who is in training with Burrows for Shadwell, and a yearling filly by Sea The Stars have attracted plenty of compliments, while the mare is ready to head to one of last year’s most exciting first-season sires after being sold not in-foal at this sale.
Brown added: “She’s got two very nice foals by all accounts. They rate the Sea The Stars filly very highly, while she has a lovely page and there’s a lot going for her.
“I was hoping not to pay that much but I did really want her. I think she will really suit Ardad. He’s chock-a-block but I have a covering that I can use.”
Blandford Bloodstock also picked up the two-year-old Awtaad half-sister to Shadwell’s magnificent Oaks and King George heroine Taghrooda at 80,000gns for a partnership.
Brown had also bought the filly’s sister, Mohjatty, at last year’s Tattersalls December Mares Sale, revealing that the four-year-old would be visiting Dubawi this term.
Brown added of the New England Stud-consigned lot: “She’s a two-year-old so we’re going to chuck her out in the field for a year. I don’t think we’ll race her. There is going to be a lot happening in the pedigree to come.”
The Shadwell fever showed no sign of waning when Meah Lloyd Bloodstock went to 105,000gns to secure the once-raced and placed Muhaarar filly Mashaaer for Jonathan Sarkar.
Now a three-year-old, the Barton Sales-consigned Mashaaer is out of the winning Distorted Humor mare Fleeting Smile, a daughter of Grade 1 winner Fleet Indian and a half-sister to Fleet Of Gold, herself the dam of Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Game Winner and Churchill Downs Stakes scorer Flagstaff.
Mashaaer, who was a fine second on her debut in an Ascot maiden last September for Richard Hannon, will stay in training, albeit with a different handler.
Jamie Lloyd said: “He’s [Sarkar] got three mares on the farm and some horses in training with Henry Spiller, which is where she’s destined to go. You don’t make private offers on a Shadwell horse but if you did, given the form of her first race, you would have been offering in the region of £250,000.
“We felt that she’s a filly that down the road, even at this price, could look cheap. Jonathan’s looking for something a bit better to add to his string.”
Sarkar himself added: “She will race and she will breed.”
Jason Singh, on behalf of Dubai-based trainer Satish Seemar, struck the winning bid at 105,000gns for Shadwell’s unnamed two-year-old filly by Exceed And Excel, who is out of a winning daughter of Queen Mary Stakes winner and 1,000 Guineas third Maqaasid.
The family is littered with black-type winners and performers, including Sydney Cup winner Shraaoh under the second dam, while under Sarayir is 1,000 Guineas and Coronation Stakes heroine Ghanaati, Cumberland Lodge Stakes winner and Champion Stakes second Mawatheeq and Oaks third Rumoush.
Singh said: “She’s been bought for an existing client of Satish Seemar’s and she goes to Dubai. He’s busy looking for recruits for the next season in the Middle East.
“He went through the catalogue himself, put a shortlist together and got the horses vetted here. She was his pick of the two-year-olds.”
An unnamed two-year-old filly by Mukhadram changed hands when selling to Cormac McCormack for 80,000gns. Also offered by New England Stud on behalf of Shadwell, the May-born filly is out of the aforementioned Hathrah.
McCormack, who also bid on Anasheed, said: “She’s for an established client. She goes into training and is a nice filly with a bit of a page, and you have to pay for them.”
Sangsterlooking for Good Memories
The unraced Good Memories was one of the highlights of Godolphin’s typically strong draft, reaching 100,000gns to the winning bid of Sam Sangster.
An unraced daughter of Sea The Stars and Group 3 Premio Sergio Cumani winner Khor Sheed, the four-year-old is a half-sister to Godolphin Stakes winner Without A Fight and from a family that includes Prix d’Ispahan winner Prince Kirk and Canadian Grade 1 winner Halo’s Princess.
Sangster said of future plans for the filly: “She’s staying here in the UK for a small breeder who has his mares with Tom Blain at Barton Stud. He’s looking at options but she’ll be covered this year, possibly by Pinatubo.
“I loved this filly, she has a lot of quality. The pedigree is very active, I think she has a lot of stallion opportunities.”
Just a few lots later, the twice-raced Dubawi filly Sacred Jewel sold to Julie Camacho for 95,000gns. Having finished a fine fourth to subsequent Lowther Stakes winner Zain Claudette on her debut for Charlie Appleby, she is set to continue her racing career - although she holds plenty of residual value as a broodmare.
The three-year-old is out of Temple Stakes winner Priceless, an Exceed And Excel half-sister to Mill Reef Stakes runner-up Doctor Brown and Bright Moll, the dam of Chipchase Stakes winner Aeolus. It is the family of Tattersalls Gold Cup winner Rebelline, the dam of Recharge.
The winning Slade Power mare Moment Of Silence, out of a stakes-placed Oasis Dream half-sister to 2020 world champion and Kildangan Stud sire Ghaiyyath, was another to make 95,000gns, this time to Forenaghts Stud.
Tally-Ho on the hunt
Tally-Ho Stud signalled their intent to support new recruit Starman when going to 52,000gns to secure the services of Duchess Rose, a Dream Ahead half-sister to last season’s Champagne Stakes winner and Dewhurst and Vertem Futurity Stakes third Bayside Boy.
The four-year-old filly was consigned by Richard Fahey’s Musley Bank Stables and attracted the attention of several bidders before Tony O’Callaghan struck the final blow. Duchess Rose is a half-sister to four winners including the aforementioned Bayside Boy, dual Huxley Stakes winner Forest Ranger and the Listed-placed Home Cummins.
O’Callaghan said: “She might be one for Starman. She’s a nice filly and we’ve been lucky with the family before - we sold her half-brother Gaudi for 260,000gns.”
The Tally-Ho supremo also went to 60,000gns to snap up Godolphin’s Iconic Look. The daughter of New Approach is out of an unraced half-sister to 2018 Derby hero and Dalham Hall Stud sire Masar who is also a sister to the Group 3-placed Sayyida.
Rathbarry Stud man Paul Cashman landed the Mayson mare Brave Blossom for 31,000gns, another consigned by Musley Bank Stables.
The four-year-old is out of a winning sister to American Grade 1 winner Prince Arch and is closely related or a half-sister to two Group 3 winners in Pincheck and Valeria Messalina. Under the second dam Princess Kris is Archangel Gabriel, the dam of last year’s progressive Pride Stakes winner Ville De Grace.
On future plans for Brave Blossom, Cashman said: “I bought her for myself, it’s a very good, tough family. She’ll probably go to either Acclamation or Kodiac.”
Overall 170 lots sold for turnover of 3,112,800gns, an average of 18,311gns and a median of 9,000gns.
The sale concludes on Friday at 10am.
