Scat Daddy filly edges closer to elite company with Debutante win

During his agonisingly short stud career the late, great Scat Daddy produced a number of deeply talented fillies; think Lady Aurelia, Acapulco and Celestine. On the evidence of Sunday's Group 2 Debutante Stakes at the Curragh, the progressive Skitter Scatter is well on her way joining that elite company.

The filly was always travelling notably well during the 7f contest, and once she hit the front over a furlong out she quickly put matters to bed, pulling two-and-a-quarter lengths clear of runner-up Bandiuc Eile.

The two-year-old has won three of her six starts, with her other victories featuring a defeat of her paternal sibling Sergei Prokofiev on her second outing and a win in the Group 3 Silver Flash Stakes on her penultimate run.

Skitter Scatter was bred in partnership between the US operation Three Chimneys Farm and the Rogers family's Airlie Stud in County Kildare. She is the second foal out of the Street Cry mare Dane Street, who was signed for by Kern Lillingston Association at $260,000 at the 2016 Keeneland November Sale.

Dane Street has also produced the Grade 3-placed More Than Ready filly Data Dependent and also has a yearling colt by the same sire and a colt foal by Scat Daddy's Group 1-winning son No Nay Never.

Dane Street is a sibling to five winners, most notably Dewhurst Stakes winner Intense Focus.

Skitter Scatter is one of two winners on the Racing Post database bred on the Scat Daddy-Street Cry cross, with the other being Wesley Ward's Sandringham Handicap winner Con Te Partiro.

Sunday's result continues a fruitful 2018 for the much missed Scat Daddy, whose performers this year have been led by Triple Crown hero Justify, Mendelssohn - who got his career back on track with a creditable runner-up finish in the Travers Stakes on Saturday - and So Perfect, who beat Skitter Scatter to land the Grangecon Stud Stakes earlier in the year before finishing second to Advertise in the Phoenix Stakes.

Furthermore, in a result that will give hope for whoever breeds from Skitter Skatter at the end of her racing career, Scat Daddy recorded his first northern hemisphere Group/Grade 1 winner as damsire on Saturday, when Whitmore - by Pleasantly Perfect - landed the Forego Stakes at Saratoga.
