Sandown racecourse and the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association have combined to host the first ever Breeders' Day on September 15, an event which aims to provide racegoers with a unique insight into the breeding industry.

The occasion, which falls during National Racehorse Week, which runs from September 12-19, will engage racegoers with competitions, interactive displays, a QR code trail, a retired racehorse parade, interviews with breeders, give-aways and trade stands.

There will also be opportunities for spectators to learn about shared ownership options and how to get involved in breeding, while every race will be sponsored by an organisation from within the bloodstock industry, with prizes for the breeder of each winner.

The National Trainers' Federation is also supporting the event and will present its Lycetts Team and Championship Awards during the afternoon.

Peter Jensen, the outgoing chairman of Sandown, said: "This is an initiative suggested by Petra Gough, one of the team here, several years ago and so we are delighted to finally have the opportunity to make it happen.

"It's fantastic the TBA have partnered with us and we hope the day will really showcase the vital role that breeders play in our industry to a new audience."

Claire Sheppard, TBA chief executive, added: “We're thrilled to be partnering with the team at Sandown to deliver its first day dedicated to showcasing the thoroughbred breed and their breeders during National Racehorse Week.

"The event will provide many opportunities for race fans to learn more about the early years of a racehorse, including interactive displays, competitions, and our trade stand, where members of the TBA team will be on hand to answer any questions and provide information on further learning opportunities and how to get involved.

"We are thankful to Sandown for approaching us with the idea and for all of their support for this day."
