Record-equalling pointer Classic Getaway makes winning debut after £570,000 sale
Son of Getaway another potential National Hunt star for Cheveley Park Stud
Classic Getaway, who equalled the record for most expensive pointer ever sold at public auction, made an impressive winning start under rules on Tuesday when landing the concluding bumper at Tipperary for Willie Mullins and Cheveley Park Stud.
A son of Getaway, the five-year-old was bred by Daniel Fogarty and made a whooping £570,000 when selling to Tom Malone and Gordon Elliott at last year's Goffs UK December Point-to-Point Sale when offered by Monbeg Stables.
In doing so, he equalled the price of Douvan's full-brother Jonbon, who sold to JP McManus at the previous month's Goffs UK P2P Sale after a protracted bidding duel. The son of Walk In The Park also made a winning debut for Nicky Henderson when striking at Newbury in March.
Classic Getaway had previously been purchased by Brendan Bashford for £24,000 at the Goffs UK January Sale when consigned by Trickledown Stud, and was then picked up by Monbeg Stables at £65,000 at the Goffs UK Spring Sale two years later.
Originally destined for Elliott's yard, Classic Getaway switched to Ireland's champion trainer earlier this season following Elliott's suspension from racing due to bringing the sport into disrepute.
Classic Getaway first appeared as a potentially top-class prospect when sauntering to an easy success in a four-year-old geldings' maiden at Borris House in November.
Out of the point-placed Classic Cliche mare Classic Magic, a relation to five winners, the gelding is already ante-post favourite for next year's Weatherbys Champion Bumper, a race his owners have won for the last three years with Sir Gerhard, Ferny Hollow and Envoi Allen.
Classic Getaway looks another exciting prospect for the Grange Stud's Getaway, who has sired the likes of Grade 1 winners Verdana Blue and Sporting John as well as the high-class Getabird, The Big Getaway and The Big Breakaway.
The son of Monsun stands for a fee of €9,000.
