Phoenix Thoroughbreds add Pocket Dynamo to burgeoning string
Son of Dialed In will remain with Robert Cowell
Rising force Phoenix Thoroughbreds has added to its string with the purchase of Pocket Dynamo, who was last seen finishing a nose second to Shang Shang Shang in the Group 2 Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot. The son of Dialed In will now be aimed at the new Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint at Churchill Downs.
"Pocket Dynamo showed brilliance when just missing by a nose in the 5f Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot, and we believe he will be perfectly suited to the new Breeders' Cup race for two-year-olds over 5½ furlongs," said Phoenix Thoroughbreds founder Amer Abdulaziz. "The colt will remain with his trainer Robert Cowell."
Pocket Dynamo was bought by Cowell on behalf of Thomas Morley for $35,000 at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale. The trainer was full of praise for his charge following his runner-up effort on his first run in Group company.
"Wesley Ward's horse [Shang Shang Shang] is quite useful, and we were giving her weight, so I think we can be very excited about the future. [Pocket Dynamo] is in great form. He's just a ball of fun and he's bright and sparky every morning," said Cowell.
The trainer has entered Pocket Dynamo in the Group 1 Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes at York on August 24, and will also consider the major two-year-old races en route to the Breeders' Cup.
"The Molecomb at Goodwood is another race on the agenda and there is also the Prix Morny (at Deauville)," said Cowell, who trains other horses for Phoenix including juvenile colt Favre. "His race at Royal Ascot was the quickest of three two-year-old races over five furlongs, so we can take some credit in that fact."
Pocket Dynamo has run four times, winning a 5f novice stakes at Chelmsford on his second start before following up in a Longchamp conditions stakes ten days later. He achieved a Racing Post Rating of 105 for this Royal Ascot effort.
