More joy for Boherguy Stud as New Approach colt reaches €40,000 at Goffs

Another day, another sale-topping result for Clare Manning's Boherguy Stud, whose New Approach colt was hammered down for €40,000 at the opening session of Goffs' Autumn Yearling Sale on Tuesday.

The County Kildare operation had sold the record-breaking lot at Tattersalls Ireland’s September Yearling Sale, when Mick Kinane went to £325,000 for the brother to subsequent Group 1 winner Gear Up.

Bred by Manning’s grandfather Jim Bolger, this colt is out of the winning Teofilo mare Neophilia - inbreeding that produced this year's Vertem Futurity Trophy winner Mac Swiney - while his second dam is a half-sister to Gearanai, whose son Gear Up struck in the Criterium de Saint-Cloud last month.

Manning said: "He was entered to go to the Sportsman's Sale, when it would have been in Kildare, but when it moved to England we decided to take a few out. We weren't sure which way the sales were going and whether it was worth our while taking them over or not.

"He was one who stayed here and it's worked out. Getting €40,000 today meant it was worth not taking him to England - it fell in our favour."

It is understood the colt will run for an all-female syndicate from County Meath.

Overall, 99 lots (from 167 offered) sold for a clearance rate of 59 per cent, and for a total of €662,400 (compared to €1,134,400 last year, when 192 sold from 254 offered at the physical sale held in October, -42 per cent), an average of €6,691 (€5,908, +13 per cent) and median of €4,200 (€3,800, +10 per cent).

There was strong international demand at Tuesday’s online auction, with buyers hailing from 11 countries, including Canada, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Italy, Kuwait, Poland and Sweden.

Eyrefield Lodge Stud's El Kabeir colt also went down well, selling to Noel Meade for €29,000. From the first crop of Yeomanstown Stud's sire, the half-brother to this season's Marble Hill Stakes scorer Minaun is from the family of Sir Edmund Loder's European champion fillies Marling and Marwell.

Tullogher House Stud's filly from the first crop of Flying Childers winner Ardad took the early lead when selling to Con Marnane of Bansha House Stables for €20,000. Out of the Haafhd mare Dame Shirley, she hails from the family of Group 3 Premio Sergio Cumani winner Welsh Diva and Group 2 Prix du Rond Point victor Trans Island.

The filly's page had received a significant boost when her Harbour Watch half-brother Baron Samedi struck in the Prix du Conseil de Paris for Joseph O'Brien last month.

The sale concludes on Wednesday, with the session starting at 10am.
