Mehmas in bloom again as Caturra lands Rose Bowl Stakes

Mehmas retained his hold on Newbury's Rose Bowl Stakes, with the narrow victory for Caturra meaning that Tally-Ho Stud's highflyer has won the Listed contest with members of both his two crops to have hit the track so far.

Last year it was Method who landed the spoils before going on to take second in the Group 3 Cornwallis Stakes, with his trainer Martyn Meade and owners Manton Park Racing having to settle for second this time as Dabirsim gelding Detail closed rapidly to finish a neck in arrears.

Caturra is trained by Clive Cox, who has the previous Bath scorer and Coventry Stakes seventh for owner Saeed bin Mohammed Al Qassimi. The colt was bought for 110,000gns at last year's Tattersalls Book 2 and was also bred by Tally-Ho out of Kevin Ryan's smart sprint handicapper Shoshoni Wind.

The Sleeping Indian mare has already produced Sir Arthur Dayne, a dual winning two-year-old for Mick Channon who has gone on to a lucrative career in Qatar.

Caturra was a 13th stakes winner for Mehmas, following on from the notable July Stakes success of Lusail last week.

Earlier on the Newbury card there was a notable two-year-old double for the Queen.

Reach For The Moon, a Sea The Stars colt out of stakes-winning Golden Stream, did what was expected in division two of the bet365 EBF Novice Stakes after chasing Point Lonsdale home in the Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot last month.

Later on Intelligentsia, who traces back to the mighty 1970 Oaks winner Lupe on her female side, was off the mark on her debut in the six-furlong fillies' race.

The daughter of Exceed And Excel was bred by Godolphin and is a half-sister to that operation's Ideal Beauty, a French Group 3 winner already this year.
