MUDBIR and PINHOLE

Aston Martin Novice Stakes (2.20 Newmarket, Wednesday)

What's the story?

Full or half-brothers to Group 1 winners from two of racing's powerhouse operations will take their first steps on a racecourse in public.

How are they bred?

We will go through them in racecard order, although Shadwell homebred Mudbir is a half-brother to not one, but two horses to have excelled at the highest level. In fact the Kingman colt is a three-parts brother to Falmouth and Sun Chariot Stakes winner Nazeef who shares her sire – Invincible Spirit – with Kingman.

They are half-siblings to Mostahdaf who defeated Luxembourg and Adayar in the Prince Of Wales's Stakes and beat Nashwa and Paddington in the Juddmonte International last season. The son of Frankel was retired to Shadwell's Beech House Stud in Newmarket where he stood of £15,000 in the spring, alongside homebred superstar Baaeed.

Nazeef was trained by John Gosden while Thady had been added to the licence by the time Mostahdaf came to winning his Group 1s and the father and son duo train Mudbir.

In addition to that pair of Group 1 winners, Mudbir has three more winning half-siblings including Dark Angel gelding Mostabshir who was fourth in the Listed Sir Henry Cecil Stakes last season and filled the same position in Royal Ascot's Buckingham Palace Stakes this year.

Their dam Handassa was trained by Kevin Prendergast to win the Listed Garnet Stakes at Naas as a three-year-old. Encouragingly for Mudbir, her only start at two came in October and it was a successful one.

Mostabshir emulated his dam with late season juvenile success on debut while Mostahdaf also made a winning start to his racing career, albeit at three.

Handassa is by Dubawi and cost Shadwell 100,000gns as a yearling at Book 1 from her breeder Red House Stud.

She is a half-sister to Grade 2 San Gabriel Stakes winner and Grade 1 Frank E Kilroe Mile third Desert Stone and to Listed Wolferton Stakes and Tapster Stakes runner-up and Group 3 Earl Of Sefton Stakes third Euginio. Both of them are by Fastnet Rock.

Mudbir's second dam Starstone is an unraced Diktat half-sister to Group 1-winning sprinters and sires Pastoral Pursuits and Goodricke, who are both sons of Cadeaux Genereux.

Juddmonte homebred Pinhole shares his sire with Mostahdaf and with another Group 1 winner by the champion sire; Quadrilateral who was victorious in the Fillies' Mile for Roger Charlton and happens to be a full-sister of Pinhole.

Making his debut for the retiring Sir Michael Stoute, Pinhole's full-sister earned further Group 1 black type at three in the 1,000 Guineas and Coronation Stakes. They are half-siblings to Listed Prix Saint-Patrick third Boardman, by Kingman out of Nimble Thimble, a winning daughter of Mizzen Mast.

As a broodmare she has produced six winners from seven runners including two more by Frankel: Quilted and Cadogan Place.

Nimble Thimble is a half-sister to Coventry Stakes winner Three Valleys, who was placed at Group 1 level in the Dewhurst and Phoenix Stakes and twice in the Grade 1 Citation Handicap.

She is also a half-sister to Back Pass, the winning dam of Australian stakes winners and sires Scissor Kick and Sharkbite.

Second dam Skiable was runner-up in the Listed Matching Stakes at Del Mar and is a Niniski half-sister to Hasili, one of the most influential broodmares of recent years. Skiable is also a half-sister to Arrive, dam of Group 1 Pretty Polly Stakes winner Promising Lead who was trained by Sir Michael.

Who do they face?

The third well-bred newcomer is Al Shaqab's 260,000gns Tattersalls Book 1 purchase Humam, a Kodiac half-brother to Group 3 winner and Group 1-placed Vadream and to the Listed-placed pair of Midream and Mirage Hero.

Trained by Andrew Balding, he is bred on the same Kodiac-Shamardal cross as Hello Youmzain and under his third dam Hazaradjat are Group 1 winners Harzand, Big Rock, Emily Upjohn, Seal Of Approval and Hurricane Lane.

Treble Tee, Simon and Ed Crisford's son of first-season sire Persian King, is a half-brother to Group 3 Prix Chloe winner Suphala and Listed winner Sivoliere.

His dam, Sefroua, won the Listed Prix de Lieurey and is a daughter of brilliant broodmare sire Kingmambo and Coronation Stakes winner Sophisticat. In turn she is by Storm Cat and out of the champion racemare and broodmare Serena's Song, making her a half-sister to Grand Reward and Serena's Tune, granddam of Grade 1 winner and sire Honor Code.

It is the family of Group 1 winners Rizeena, Zabeel Prince, Camille Pissarro and Golden Horde.
