What's the story?

At Tattersalls Book 1 earlier this month, trade skyrocketed with seven-figure sums dropping with almost monotonous regularity as Godolphin and Amo Racing spent close to £50,000,000 on yearlings.

Godolphin's most expensive purchase was the sale's third highest-priced yearling, a Siyouni half-sister to last year's Group 1 Fillies' Mile winner Ylang Ylang who cost 3,700,000gns from Newsells Park Stud.

In between foaling those two fillies Shambolic produced a colt by Kingman and he makes his long-awaited debut at Southwell on Monday.

How's he bred?

The preamble gave the game away but it's worth recapping.

Kaizen cost 425,000gns at Book 1 last year, where he was purchased by Qatar Racing and China Horse Club and he carries the green colours of Howden Racing, who own the colt in partnership with Sheikh Fahad's operation, China Horse Club and Newsells, who bred the colt with Merry Fox Stud.

He is the second foal out of Shambolic and her least expensive. Her first, the aforementioned Ylang Ylang, made 1,500,000 to MV Magnier at Book 1 in 2022, consigned by Newsells.

She was a high-class juvenile for Aidan O'Brien and Coolmore, also winning the Group 3 Silver Flash Stakes and finishing third in the Rockfel.

Shambolic foaled a Frankel full-sister to Ylang Ylang this year.

Bred and raced by the late Duke of Devonshire, Shambolic was trained by John Gosden who, along with his son Thady, trains Kaizen. Shambolic was second in the Listed Pretty Polly and Height Of Fashion Stakes, third at the same level in the Chalice Stakes and fourth in the Fillies' Mile.

She was sold for 800,000gns to Hadden Bloodstock at the 2019 Tattersalls December Breeding Stock Sale.

Her Marju half-brother is the dual Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup winner Viva Pataca (also known as Comic Strip) was successful in the Hong Kong Derby and three renewals of the Hong Kong Champions and Chater Cup.

Another half-sibling, the Dansili mare Laughing, won the Grade 1 Diana Stakes and Flower Bowl Invitational Stakes.

Shambolic is a half-sister to Blinking, the unraced dam of Listed Beckford Stakes winner Twitch and second dam of Listed Winterkonigin Trial winner Romsey and Sweet Solera Stakes third Montisfont.

Out of Comic, a winning Be My Chief half-sister to multiple Grade 2 winner and sire Brave Act, Shambolic comes from the family of Australia's champion three-year-old filly of 2005-06, the Group 1 Victoria Oaks and AJC Oaks winner Serenade Rose.

Who does he face?

Jamie Osborne saddles two expensive breeze-up buys and both run in the colours of Jim and Claire Limited.

Saffie Osborne is on board Heart Of Honor, a first-crop son of Santa Anita Derby winner Honor AP and the Chilean Group 1 winner Ruby Love, by Scat Daddy. He was bought for €160,000 at the Arqana Breeze-Up Sale from Meadowview Stables.

Golden Garden, ridden by Danny Muscutt, was a little more pricey at 175,000gns from Yeomanstown Stud at the Craven Breeze-Up Sale. The son of Medaglia D'Oro is the first foal of Listed winner Canadian Garden, by Malibu Moon.

The David O'Meara-trained Criminal Shore is a Kodiac half-brother to Group 3 winners Steip Amach and Ceisteach; he cost €80,000 from Tally Ho Stud at Goffs Orby Book 1.

Of those with previous runs to their credit, the form seems to revolve around the Wolverhampton novice earlier this month in which Sea Baaeed made a winning debut.

No Nay Never colt Via Con Me, who had been sixth behind Bay City Roller on his debut at Chelmsford, was third for the Crisfords, while Archie Watson's Riyadh Gem, another Meadowview Stables' breeze-up graduate, was eighth in that Wolverhampton race.
