Dissident

Haynes, Hanson & Clark Novice Stakes (3.30 Newbury, Friday)

What's the story?

Juddmonte's current crop of juveniles look a smart bunch and and Abdullah family's operation has another blue-blooded newcomer set to debut in Dissident, a son of Frankel and Matron Stakes winner Emulous. Sadly there will be no Classic aspirations for him as he's received the cruellest cut, although he's still an intriguing newcomer anyway.

How's he bred?

The Ralph Beckett runner is the seventh foal out of Emulous, a high-class Dansili sister to Deauville Group 3 scorer First Sitting and Daring Diva, the second dam of Kentucky Derby and Haskell Stakes Mandaloun.

Emulous is best known as the dam of the top-class Bluestocking, a recent winner of an excellent Prix Vermeille and another top-level event in the Pretty Polly Stakes at the Curragh. The daughter of Camelot, also a wide-margin winner of the Middleton Stakes this term, was second in last year's Irish Oaks and British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes.

Emulous has produced three other winners, including smart handicapper Qirat, while she has a yearling filly by Kingman and a filly foal by Frankel.

Who does he face?

Dissident's rivals include King Of Cities, a son of Dubawi who struck on his second start at Chester last month. The Sheikh Mohammed Obaid homebred is out of Prix Jean Romanet scorer Ajman Princess, making him a half-brother to this year's Commonwealth Cup winner Inisherin. Ajman Princess is a daughter of emerging blue hen Reem Three, also the second dam of this term's Irish 2,000 Guineas and St James's Palace Stakes hero Rosallion.

The Mark Of Esteem mare is also the dam of 2023 Queen Anne winner Triple Time, as well as fellow Group scorers Ostilio and Cape Byron and Listed winners Third Realm and Captain Winters. Another daughter, Imperial Charm was third in the Prix Saint-Alary, while Bolsena has twice placed in stakes company this season.

Another to note is Wathnan Racing's Dunamase, a Kingman brother to Jersey Stakes winner Age Of Kings who was a 500,000gns Tattersalls Book 1 purchase from Corduff Stud nearly a year ago.

Regal Ulixes, a Ulysses close relation to multiple Pattern winner and Group 1-placed Regal Reality, was a fine third on debut at Goodwood earlier this month, while the field is completed by  Echalar, an improved third on his second start at Kempton this month. The Too Darn Hot colt is a half-brother to two stakes winners, including Chester Vase winner Youth Spirit.
