Major update sees Native Trail's Kingman half-sister bring €950,000 at Arqana
Haras d’Haspel-consigned filly topped day one of the August Sale in Deauville
Haras d’Haspel’s Kingman half-sister to Native Trail was one of the lots to receive a sizeable update to her pedigree after her half-brother’s Superlative Stakes win this summer, and Godolphin talent spotter Anthony Stroud wasted little time in stretching to €950,000 for the regally bred filly during day one of the Arqana August Sale in Deauville.
The blue-blooded youngster is out of Needleleaf, an unraced sister to Haydock Sprint Cup scorer African Rose, who is also the dam of the Group 3-winning Fair Eva, and French Group scorer Helleborine, whose Kingman son Calyx struck in the Coventry Stakes and now stands at Coolmore.
The filly's Oasis Dream sibling was picked up by Godolphin for 210,000gns at the Tattersalls Craven Breeze-Up Sale, a result that looks a shrewd move after the colt’s cosy Group 2 success last month.
Stroud explained: “She’s a lovely filly and everyone knows what a good stallion Kingman is, he’s got Palace Pier running for him tomorrow. Godolphin own the two-year-old, who we like a great deal, and she’s from a wonderful Juddmonte family.
“She’ll be very valuable after her racing career, effectively she has a pedigree, she has very good conformation and she's one we wanted to have.”
It was an especially pleasurable result for Jose Delmotte of Haras d’Haspel, who picked up the eight-year-old Needleleaf for just 60,000gns from Juddmonte at the Tattersalls December Mare Sale in 2015.
He said: “It’s a great result. I heard all the wonderful compliments people were paying her, that she was exceptional, fabulous. It’s wonderful.”
The attractive filly is the third foal out of Needleleaf, who has since produced a filly foal by Siyouni and is currently carrying to Darley’s first-crop sire Cracksman. Further back in the page is Dewhurst winner Distant Music, Jockey Club Gold Cup scorer Vanlandingham and Moyglare Stud Stakes heroine Termagant.
Stroud made further inroads when going to €350,000 for Ballylinch Stud’s Lope De Vega colt out of Park Express Stakes winner Normandel, a sister to the dam of Coronation Cup and Great Voltigeur Stakes victor Pyledriver.
"He's from a good farm and is a very active horse, a very good mover and loose-goer," said Stroud. "I liked him very much. He will go back to England."
‘He really caught our eye’
Oliver St Lawrence delivered the €2.5 million auction-topping bid at last year's flagship yearling event in Deauville when securing the half-sister to Sistercharlie and Sottsass, and the agent swooped once again when going to €750,000 for the Dubawi colt out of Prix Minerve scorer Golden Valentine during the opening stages on Saturday evening.
Having had to fend off Godolphin last September at an amended renewal of the French sale, St Lawrence found himself bidding against Coolmore before landing the Ecurie des Monceaux-consigned youngster, who hails from the family of the brilliant Goldikova, Prix Vermeille heroine Galikova and the multiple top-level placed Haras du Quesnay resident Anodin.
St Lawrence said: “He’s a lovely Dubawi and he really caught our eye at an early stage. The owner was very keen to get him so hopefully he’s happy.
“He’s for KHK Racing, they own 50 per cent of the Dubawi filly that we bought here last year. Hopefully we’ve bought a good one, we’re buying horses who will hopefully run well.”
The colt, who was bred by Monceaux and LNJ Foxwoods, is the second foal out of Golden Valentine, and her first, the two-year-old Galileo colt Shadowfax, is currently in training with John and Thady Gosden having been signed for by David Redvers at €450,000 at Arqana last year. Although no firm training plans are in place, St Lawrence confirmed his purchase would also be heading to Britain.
Golden Valentine is a daughter of Dalakhani and the Wertheimer-bred Caerleon mare Gold Round, who won the Group 3 Prix Cleopatre and counts the brilliant Goldikova among her seven black-type performing siblings. Golden Valentine produced a brother to the €750,000 colt earlier this year.
The Monceaux draft looked like producing another early highlight when the bidding for the Medaglia D'Oro colt out of Golden Attitude, a daughter of Redoute's Choice from the same family as Golden Valentine, hit €550,000. However, the well-related youngster was led out unsold.
Redvers strikes for sole Galileo on day one
Only four yearlings by Coolmore’s late phenomenon Galileo were catalogued for the three-day sale but David Redvers took his opportunity when going to €600,000 to secure another from the Monceaux draft in the half-sister to the high-class Wind Chimes.
An attractive racing prospect, being a half-sister to the aforementioned Wind Chimes and the Listed-placed Golden Fastnet, Redvers was also looking ahead to the filly’s long-term future as part of Qatar Racing’s broodmare band.
“They stopped making Galileos sadly and he has been such a world-changing stallion,” said Redvers. “She's from a lovely young family and Monceaux do a quite incredible job. She's very athletic and strong and correct, basically everything we want to add to our broodmare band. I thought at the price she was good value.
“As ever I’m full of optimism at this stage but she's a lovely filly that has come off the best farm in France and is by the best stallion the world has seen in recent years. It’s great to be able to add her to the band.”
Qatar Racing have a deep history with horses trained in France going back to the start of their ambitions in the sport and this filly will attempt to add to that legacy.
Redvers added: “She’ll stay in France and I’ll talk to Sheikh Fahad."
Sealiway sibling in demand
As a Galiway sister to a French juvenile Group 1 winner in Sealiway, Seagala was always going to attract a flurry of bids and so it proved when Florent Fonteyne of Trotting Bloodstock went to €380,000 for the Haras de Colleville-consigned filly.
Last season’s Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere winner had provided another timely boost when running an excellent second to the brilliant St Mark’s Basilica in the Prix du Jockey Club, while Fonteyne added that his clients had plenty of faith in Guy Pariente’s breeding.
Fonteyne said: “We really love Galiway and we have sent several broodmares to him this year. My clients place a great deal of trust in the breeding operation of Guy Pariente. And on top of that, she is the sister to this year’s best three-year-old in France.
“We have a very good relationship with Monsieur Pariente and the partnership we have in Arrogan [an unraced son of Arrogate in training with Francis Graffard] works very well.”
Fonteyne also struck at €220,000 with the previous lot, a Colleville-consigned sister to the ultra-consistent Kenway, who could add to his considerable black type profile across the road at Deauville racecourse on Sunday.
“I'm lucky to have clients who like to get into partnerships, especially when it comes to fillies with a view to breeding, while Haras de Colleville is currently leading breeder in France for the year. I bought both these fillies for Ronan Kedraon [KR Group] and Thomas Lines,” said Fonteyne.
Frankel brother to Rip Van Winkle heading to Germany
La Motteraye’s Frankel three-parts brother to the outstanding Rip Van Winkle will be trained in Germany after selling to agent Peter Brauer of Panorama Bloodstock for €250,000.
Out of the Stravinsky mare Looking Back, a dual winner and Listed-placed in Italy, the colt is also related to Italian Group 3 winner Le Vie Infinite and La Grande Elisa, the dam of Sweet Solera Stakes victress Star Of Emaraaty.
On the decision to purchase the son of the dual world champion, Brauer explained: “I bought the horse for a German client who races under the name of Stall Salzburg, and who has about 30 horses in Munich with a private trainer, Sarah Steinberg. They are doing pretty well.
“The owner, Herr Wernicke, was here yesterday and looked at a number of horses. He liked this one very much because he found him very athletic and a very good mover.”
Family ties links Stroud to Lope colt
Anthony Stroud was among the buyers early on in the session when going to €200,000 for the La Motteraye-consigned Lope De Vega colt out of a sister to Group 3 winners Royal Empire and Scottish.
From a family that also includes Poule d’Essai des Pouliches heroine Precieuse and Group 2 Grosse Europa Meile winner Combat Zone, the colt can also count this season’s Craven Stakes second and Group 3 Somerville Stakes scorer La Barrosa among his near relatives.
Stroud, who signed on behalf of Godolphin, said: “He’s a nice athletic horse and we’ve had a lot of success with the family. He's a horse who needs time and he’ll stay in France to be trained.”
Updates upcoming for Oceanic buy
An update could be imminent for Haras du Cadran’s Le Havre filly as her half-brother, the Siyouni gelding Wally runs in Sunday’s Group 3 Prix Gontaut-Biron at Deauville. She was picked up for €200,000 by Michel Zerolo of Oceanic Bloodstock.
Out of an Italian Oaks runner-up in the winning Motivator mare Full Of Beauty, the filly is from a quality family, having performers like King’s Stand scorer Prohibit, American Grade 3 scorer Out Of Reach and the Listed-winning and Group 3-placed Emergency further back in the page.
Zerolo said: “If you look at the pedigree you have Wally, who is a good horse, while the mare's second foal, Silver Lining, looks a very promising filly. And as an individual she's a lovely filly by a good sire. The rest is pretty self-evident. She’ll go to Jean-Claude Rouget who trains the first two.”
The sale continues from 4.30pm BST today, when among the highlights are Haras de Montaigu’s Galileo half-sister to Derby hero Wings Of Eagles (Lot 120), the Ecurie des Monceaux-consigned Siyouni half-sister to National Defense (122) and a Kingman half-brother to Group 1 winners Jakkalberry, Crackerjack King and Awelmarduk (156).
