Kyllachy's breeders put historic Wheelersland Stud on the market for £2 million
The Hampshire-based stud bred and raised the Nunthorpe winner among many others
Wheelersland Stud, which bred and raised Nunthorpe winner and Cheveley Park sire Kyllachy, among several notable racehorses, is for sale with Knight Frank to offers in excess of £2 million.
Located in Ashford Hill, Hampshire, the property was constructed by the Wright family in the 1960s and has been occupied by them ever since.
The equestrian facilities boast eight loose boxes including two foaling boxes, a feed store and a tack room, while the paddocks are part of 13 acres of land.
There is also a concrete frame barn with a lean-to either side, providing tractor and further storage, and an outbuilding handy for machinery and general belongings.
The detached house contains five bedrooms, three bathrooms and four reception rooms. There is also a cottage available by separate negotiation.
Wheelersland Stud was built by Anne Burges Wright and husband James in 1966, and was run and managed by Anne for more than half a century.
The Wright family never had more than four broodmares at any one time but punched well above their weight and bred Kyllachy, winner of the Nunthorpe and Temple Stakes for Henry Candy before being retired to stand at Cheveley Park Stud.
Among his leading performers were top-level winning sprinter Sole Power, Twilight Son - now an emerging sire himself for Cheveley Park - and Krypton Factor.
Anne sold her yearlings at Newmarket and Doncaster and occasionally bought back a mare to continue a successful line after they had won on the track.
By 1993 the stud had recorded 100 winners, and they kept coming. Another success story was seven-time winner Binanti, whose finest hour came when landing the Buckingham Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot in 2007 for Patrick Chamings.
In 2002 Anne received the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association's Langham Cup, presented to the small Flat breeder of the year. She died in May this year aged 103, and Wheelersland is subsequently on the market.
The property is a couple of miles from Kingsclere and nine miles from Newbury, while the surrounding countryside offers plenty of riding and walking routes.
