Kodiac behind pace of 2017 record as he chalks up 30th juvenile winner

Tally-Ho Stud stalwart set a new high of 61 juvenile winners last year

Kodiac has to make up for lost time if he is to break his own world record of 61 individual juvenile winners from a single crop, with the son of Danehill recording his 30th of the season on Thursday.

Blyton completed an across-the-card double for the sire, the main breadwinner for Tally-Ho Stud, by winning the 6f Smarkets British EBF Novice Stakes at Haydock.

Meanwhile Marhaba Milliar - whose half-sister Queen Kindly, dam Lady Of The Desert and granddam Queen's Logic all won the Lowther Stakes at York - got the ball rolling by landing the British Stallion Studs EBF Novice Stakes over the same distance at Yarmouth.

Marhaba Milliar is now unbeaten in two starts as she was promoted to first on debut in an Ascot novice stakes.

Kodiac sits comfortably clear of his nearest pursuers - freshman pair Bungle Inthejungle and No Nay Never, as well as Dandy Man - at the top of the table for leading European sires of two-year-olds by number of winners.

But he reached the same landmark of 30 winners some 12 days earlier in 2017 - on July 28 versus August 9 this year.

In terms of ammunition, Kodiac has five more two-year-olds to represent him this year - with 195 two-year-olds on the ground.

An eye-catcher among the unraced names is Qatar Queen, an unraced half-sister to Barney Roy in training with Richard Hannon.

As her name suggests, she will race in the colours of Qatar Racing, who picked her up through David Redvers for the sale-topping sum of 400,000gns at last year's Tattersalls December Yearling Sale.

Another to note is Kodiak Attack, a full-brother to Flying Childers hero Ardad in the care of Sylvester Kirk.

This year's two-year-olds were bred at a €25,000 fee, a steep rise on Kodiac's €10,000 fee in 2014, due in part to the exploits of his Group 1-winning daughter Tiggy Wiggy.

The pedigrees of Qatar Queen and Kodiak Attack provide evidence of the higher calibre of mare he received in 2015.

With the Group-placed trio Fairyland, Kodyanna and Shades Of Blue already flying the flag for this year's two-year-old crop, it will be interesting to see how his juveniles fare when the Group 1 juvenile contests roll around, and whether he can close in on his own astonishing record.
