Kingman colt Mathletic tops the Arqana December Online Sale at €500,000
Group 3-placed runner sold to Ballymore Stables Australia and Paul Moroney
The Group 3-placed Kingman colt Mathletic topped a busy renewal of Arqana's December Online Sale when making €500,000 to Mike Moroney's Ballymore Stables Australia.
A progressive sort, the Ecurie des Monceaux-bred Mathletic was a three-quarter length second to dual Group 1 winner Skalleti on his last start in a Listed event at Saint-Cloud in November.
The winner of two races for Andre Fabre and Ecurie Ama Zingteam, the three-year-old was also a narrow second in the Group 3 Prix de Fontainebleau at Longchamp in April, going down by a neck to the high-class Welwal, subsequently only three lengths off Modern Games when sixth in the Poule d'Essai des Poulains.
Mathletic, who sold to BBA Ireland for €220,000 at Arqana's Select Yearling Sale in 2020, can count the Graded-winning Marbre Rose (by Smart Strike) and stakes winner Gidu (Frankel) among his four half-siblings. They are out of a winning Unbridled's Song half-sister to two Grade 1 winners. He was bought in combination with Moroney's bloodstock agent brother Paul.
The Moroneys also secured Gregolimo, a stakes winner last summer and also second to Bubble Gift in the Group 2 Prix Hocquart, for the sum of €220,000. The four-year-old son of Galiway was second on his return to action at Longchamp in October.
A 1/50th share in the Aga Khan Studs' exciting sire Zarak also went over the €400,000 mark when selling to David Redvers for €450,000.
The son of Dubawi and outstanding racemare Zarkava has had his fee for 2023 more than doubled to €60,000 (from €25,000) at Haras de Bonneval after another excellent year on the track.
Last year's Criterium International third Purplepay struck for Zarak in the Prix de Sandringham, while other notable progeny included stakes scorer and Poule d'Essai des Pouliches third Times Square - a €1,250,000 purchase by De Burgh Equine and James Harron at Arqana's Breeding Stock Sale this month - Group winners Sirjan and Baiykara as well as La Parisienne, a narrow second in the Prix de Diane to the top-class Nashwa.
Wavy, a daughter of Adlerflug offered by Wertheimer and Frere, sold to Stroud Coleman for €150,000. Arqana reported that more than 130 buyers were registered to bid and 15 of the 19 lots sold for a turnover of €1,8,45,500.
