Juddmonte go to $600,000 to secure flashy Tiznow colt with stallion potential
Who trains the colt to be decided on further down the line
Motivated by a desire to eventually add more stallions to its American roster in addition to winning more elite races, Juddmonte Farms went to $600,000 to acquire a flashy colt by Tiznow in the concluding session of the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga select yearling sale on Tuesday night.
Garrett O’Rourke, who oversees Juddmonte’s American racing and breeding interests, signed the ticket on the bay with four white socks who was bred by Barbara Banke’s Stonestreet and consigned by Warrendale Sales.
“Hopefully he’ll be another stallion in the stallion barn someday,” O’Rourke said. “He is a lovely horse. I went to see him the first time and he was an obvious choice, and when I went back to see him a second time, he was even more obvious.
“If he can run to his looks, I think he’ll be a horse than can pay for himself."
Brimming with promise
The colt’s pedigree brims with stallion potential. His dam is the stakes-placed Storm Cat mare Stormin Maggy, a half-sister to champion and dual classic winner Afleet Alex.
While Juddmonte bought champion and current Kentucky resident stallion star Arrogate as a yearling while targeting horses to be trained by Bob Baffert, O’Rourke said a decision on a trainer for the Tiznow colt will be made at a later date.
He said: “We’ve learned it’s best to bring them all home and get them rolling. It’s premature to make plans for them before you really learn what they are and what their best attributes are going to be. You make better plans when you’re a little further down the line."
Juddmonte could possibly seek more colts at the Keeneland September yearling sale, although O’Rourke said Prince Khalid Abdullah will decide priorities regarding acquisitions.
