From finding a wall to hang that picture bequeathed by a relative to taking on a tortoise which has predictably outlasted its owner, we all find ways to keep flames alight and honour our past.

Peter Michael’s choice was to ensure that a succession of fine jumpers cultivated by his uncle John, a stud owner, would not be forgotten and last month’s Grade 2 victory at Naas by promising novice hurdler Jason The Militant has proved that it was an endeavour with more than mere sentimental attachment.

"Jason The Militant is out of Rock Angel, who is out of Ramich John," he details. "Ramich John was my uncle’s horse, and that’s where the lineage goes back to.
