WATCH: highlights from a blockbuster week at Tattersalls
Simon Kerins on selling Marsha, the last Ballymacoll lot and more
After a blockbuster renewal of the Tattersalls December Breeding Stock Sale, during which the European auction record price was broken when top sprinter Marsha fetched 6,000,000gns and the final chapter in the story of the famous Ballymacoll Stud played out, we look back at some of the best of the action caught on camera.
Con Marnane talked to us about Different League, the Albany Stakes winner he could not find a buyer for and so subsequently raced himself. The daughter of Dabirsim sold to White Birch Farm and MV Magnier for 1,500,000gns.
In emotional scenes, Peter Reynolds, who managed Ballymacoll Stud for decades until it was sold this year, led the very last lot to be dispersed by the stud - the brilliant racemare Islington - around the ring for one circuit. The mare was eventually sold to Blandford Bloodstock for 270,000gns.
After Prix de l'Abbaye and Nunthorpe heroine Marsha sold to Coolmore for the record-busting price of 6,000,000gns, we spoke to Dan Downie, the manager of the Elite Racing Club, which bred and owns the daughter of Acclamation, and Simon Kerins, who wielded the gavel during the bidding.
Another sprint queen who sold for a huge price was Quiet Reflection, who also went the way of Coolmore for 2,100,000gns. We spoke to her regular work rider, jockey Jordan Vaughan, before she sold.
During the sales many studs around Newmarket open their doors to allow breeders to view stallions as they make mating plans for next year's breeding season. We caught up with Chris Richardson at Cheveley Park Stud and spoke to him about new recruit Ulysses.
