'Fast Grade 1 winners with tremendous physicals, pedigree, and sire power' - Dornoch and National Treasure to stand at Spendthrift Farm for 2025

Spendthrift Farm has announced that Classic winners Dornoch and National Treasure will retire following this year's Breeders' Cup and join the farm's stallion roster for the 2025 breeding season. 

The pair of multiple Grade 1 winners will join fellow Grade 1 winner Kingsbarns, who retired to Spendthrift last month and will stand the 2025 season for a fee of $20,000 S&N, Spendthrift announced on Saturday. Kingsbarns is now available for inspection by appointment.

"This year marks 20 years since Mr. Hughes purchased Spendthrift, and our stallion roster has come a long way over the years. We take a lot of pride in the fact that we were able to bring in a couple of well-bred, well-respected American Classic winners in the same year. That's just not something you have an opportunity to do very often," said Ned Toffey, Spendthrift general manager. 

"Including Kingsbarns, all three of these new stallion prospects are fast Grade 1 winners with tremendous physicals, pedigree, and sire power. We believe they will all be very popular among breeders."  

Dornoch, one of the current front-runners in the three-year-old division, scored back-to-back wins this summer in the Belmont Stakes at Saratoga and Haskell Stakes at Monmouth Park. Earlier this year, he won the Fountain of Youth Stakes at Gulfstream Park. He also captured the Remsen Stakes at Aqueduct last year as a two-year-old.

Trained by Danny Gargan, the son of Good Magic will train up to his final start in the Breeders' Cup Classic at Del Mar. Dornoch, a full-brother to 2023 Kentucky Derby winner Mage, has earned $2,427,275 to date for owners West Paces Racing, R. A. Hill Stable, Belmar Racing and Breeding, Two Eight Racing, and Pine Racing Stables.

National Treasure, a winner of the 2023 Preakness Stakes at Pimlico, finished off his three-year-old season with a narrow defeat to Horse of the Year Cody's Wish   in last year's Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile at Santa Anita Park. He carried that momentum into 2024, becoming one of the top older horses in training, starting the year with a victory in the Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes at Gulfstream. 

Trained by Bob Baffert, the four-year-old son of Quality Road scored a dominant victory in the prestigious Metropolitan Handicap at Saratoga this spring, surpassing the $5 million earnings mark. National Treasure, who is being considered for the Breeders' Cup Classic or Dirt Mile, currently has earnings of $5,378,000 for owners SF Racing, Starlight Racing, Madaket Stables, Robert Masterson, Stonestreet Stables, Jay Schoenfarber, Waves Edge Capital, and Catherine Donovan.

Stud fees for both Dornoch and National Treasure will be announced after the Breeders' Cup.
