Another brilliant crop of juveniles will extend Galileo's dominance

The weekend delivered more proof, as if it were needed, of the prodigious talent of Galileo as a sire. To recap: he delivered winners of both the 2,000 and 1,000 Guineas, Churchill and Winter, becoming the first sire in more than 80 years to achieve the feat, while daughter Seventh Heaven enjoyed a walk in the park in the Jockey Club Stakes and son Douglas Macarthur laid down a Classic marker by taking the Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial.

But that is not all; far from it. Churchill led home Barney Roy, who is out of a mare by Galileo, and Coolmore's phenomenal sire has now featured in the pedigrees of all of the last five 2,000 Guineas winners: as sire of Gleneagles and Churchill, maternal grandsire of Night Of Thunder and Galileo Gold, and as paternal grandsire of Dawn Approach through New Approach.

Winter led home a one-two for Galileo, with Rhododendron advertising her Oaks potential by staying on into second after finding trouble in running. That result came one year after Galileo progeny, led by the brilliant Minding, filled the first three places in the race.

Speaking of tricasts, that is just what Galileo achieved in the Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial, as Douglas Macarthur led home paternal half-brothers Yucatan and Capri.

It seems inconceivable that Galileo will not be leading sire in Europe for a ninth time this year, especially as he has yet another crop of two-year-olds with exceptional pedigrees waiting in the wings.

They include siblings to the sire's current superstar offspring. Churchill, Winter, Rhododendron, Douglas Macarthur and Yucatan have sisters named Clemmie, Chariot, Magical, Park Bloom and Raja Ampat, while Seventh Heaven has a brother who is as yet unnamed and in training with Aidan O'Brien.

Many of those others, you would imagine, will also join the Ballydoyle battalions apart from Raja Ampat, who is in training with Andre Fabre for owner-breeders the Niarchos family, and perhaps Park Bloom, who appears to have been retained by breeder Lodge Park Stud.

Many of the Group 1 winners who sent Galileo streets ahead in the sire championship last year also have full-brothers or sisters. Alice Springs has an unnamed sister; Deauville has an unnamed brother with David Simcock; Found has an unnamed brother with Aidan O'Brien; Highland Reel has a sister named Via Condotti with Andre Fabre; Minding has a sister named Conquest; The Gurkha has an unnamed sister; and The United States has an unnamed brother with O'Brien. Again, many of those without trainers officially registered yet will also, presumably, join O'Brien.

Churchill, Winter and Seventh Heaven, all out of sprinting mares, have shone the spotlight on crossing Galileo with speed – a recipe that has been repeated often since the best exemplar of its success, Frankel. It is not for nothing that top sprinters Margot Did, Mecca's Angel and Tiggy Wiggy have been bought as mates for Galileo in big-money purchases.

Two-year-olds with that blend of stamina and speed who are not out of, or siblings to, Group 1 winners include Butterscotch, a half-sister to Norfolk Stakes second Coach House out of Golden Jubilee Stakes third Lesson In Humility; Ryoken, a half-brother to precocious talent Lilbourne Lad who has been sold to Japan; Somerset Maugham, a colt out of Phoenix Sprint Stakes winner Fire Lily with Aidan O'Brien; an unnamed filly out of Flying Five winner and Golden Jubilee Stakes second Danehurst with David Simcock; and an unnamed half-brother to Air Chief Marshal, Misu Bond and Slip Dance at Ballydoyle.

There are many other well-bred two-year-olds by Galileo in 2017 besides those mentioned in this article who on paper look capable of running well this year and flourishing into champions – including Secret Gaze, the sister to Secret Gesture bought by Qatar Racing for 1,350,000gns, and the Aidan O'Brien-trained colt out of Group 3-placed Gooseberry Fool bought by Coolmore for 750,000gns.

The good news for Galileo fans, and bad news for Coolmore's rivals, is that the stallion has similarly outstanding crops of yearlings and foals in the pipeline.

We can expect many more weekends like the last one, during which Galileo dominated Group racing in Europe.
