'I think he'll suit her well' - Moyglare's broodmare band set for top sires

The familiar black, white and red colours of Moyglare Stud have been carried to success by countless stars down the years - think recent Group 1 winners such as Free Eagle and Search For A Song - and the operation's broodmare band is now set for another season of top-class coverings.

The 2021 breeding season follows on from a period of lockdowns and global economic uncertainty as a result of coronavirus. Moyglare's bloodstock advisor Fiona Craig noted that the restrictions on travel have been far from ideal, although she explains that it was possible to work around those concerns while formulating mating plans with the stud's owner Eva Maria Bucher-Haefner.

"I couldn't come back here for a year and Eva Maria comes in from Switzerland and has to quarantine for two weeks and then when going back there - it's not practical," she said. "I send Eva Maria a list, we all go through it and I try to show her as many of these stallions as I can through the year, but it has not been easy recently."

Despite all the ongoing global issues, the show must go on as far as the breeding season is concerned and the operation is full to the brim with blue-blooded mares heading for the leading stallions.

An exciting new addition to the broodmare band is All Our Tomorrows, a 1,700,000gns purchase from the Ballymacoll Stud dispersal. The daughter of Kingman, who is out of an unraced Galileo sibling to the brilliant Islington, is set for a star first date with Dubawi.

Craig said of the twice-raced half-sister to the triple stakes-winning Abingdon: "Having spent what we did on the mare, we're praying for a filly as the stud's success with Dubawi fillies to date far exceeds that with his colts. She's a big mare, took a lot of time, and unfortunately on her first run she was going well until she ended up running into the back of another horse.

"I don't know whether she'd have won that day but she was running a nice race. She got a bit of a wallop - it's unfortunate but that's the way it goes."

The dual Group 3-winning Dansili mare Carla Bianca and Switch Around, a daughter of Galileo and US Grade 1 winner Switch, are both booked in for Coolmore's exciting young sire Wootton Bassett.

"We thought about using him last year but didn't get round to it - I wish we had as he'd have been a third of the price! I went to see him in January and he should suit Carla Bianca. She needs a bit of size and a fairly strong horse, while Switch Around is a Galileo and one we may keep or sell," said Craig.

"Carla's had a couple of Dubawis and is in foal to No Nay Never, we just wanted something a little bit different and I think he'll suit her well."

Irish Leger runner-up Profound Beauty is in foal to Too Darn Hot and is set for a mating with Night Of Thunder, with Craig reasoning: "She's a great big mare, stayed two miles and her first foal was Rose De Pierre who's by Dubawi, but she's a tricky mare - if you get a filly then you're okay, if you get a colt, it's like a larger slower version of herself to date, but we will live in hope that that might change.

"She visited Too Darn Hot, I liked his size and quality for a mare like her and that's the reason for Night Of Thunder plus the Dubawi link. I've also yet to see a giant Night Of Thunder."

Juddmonte sires will also be receiving support, with Profound Beauty's dual Listed-winning daughter Rose De Pierre visiting Kingman, having recently foaled to Frankel.

Craig said: "She's a real Dubawi, quite short in the leg, solid and deep. She wasn't a star but was a consistent stakes mare. She foaled a lovely filly to Frankel the other day and Kingman should physically suit her well."

Kingman's Group 2-placed daughter Kiss For A Jewel was retired from the track last year and is set for a date with Frankel. Craig said: "She's the first filly out of Sapphire and we've three Galileo fillies in training coming along so we'll evaluate [whether to sell] at the end of the year or next year. She's a typical Kingman - tall, slightly narrow and long backed - and she should suit Frankel well."

Making Light and British Champions Fillies And Mares winner Sapphire - both of whom are due to foal later in the season, the former to Sea The Stars and the latter to Dubawi - have been pencilled in for the mighty Galileo, while Sense Of Purpose will be covered by Harzand after producing a Ten Sovereigns colt.

Craig said of the 14-year-old Sense Of Purpose: "She's short legged and can throw similar type foals, but we've a nice two-year-old Mastercraftsman filly in training who's a good size. She's a Group-winning Galileo mare and I'd hate to sell her as she's one of the first Galileo stakes mares bred by Moyglare."

The Listed-winning and Group 3-placed Joailliere, a daughter of Dubawi and Majestic Silver, is in foal to Frankel and has been lined up for Lope De Vega. Craig said: "Her first foal is a Siyouni (Reve De Vol) who was with Ger Lyons last year when he won and was Group placed. He's been gelded and Ger hopes to get him to Listed level this season before he is sold.

"She has a really lovely two-year-old Frankel filly (Homeless Songs) and she went back to Frankel last year on the basis of her - she's a very pretty, typical Dubawi mare and I felt she might suit Lope De Vega well."

On the other stallions due to be supported by the Moyglare mares, Craig added: "Unusually we've got quite a lot of maidens being bred, they were meant to go to Goffs in February but when that went online we decided to breed from them.

"They'll probably appear in November in foal when hopefully we're back to some degree of normal and that's why we've used the likes of Oasis Dream, Bated Breath, Earthlight and Phoenix Of Spain, something that would hopefully be reasonably commercial when we sell them in the autumn."

Craig also has news of the exciting Port Sunlight, a daughter of dual Derby winner Harzand who was a three-length winner on her second start at Gowran Park in October. She holds an entry for the Irish Oaks and is seemingly held in high regard by trainer Dermot Weld.

She said: "She is the foal that Liber Nauticus was carrying when purchased from Ballymacoll dispersal, so all credit to them for the mating. She's very active but is training very well and will probably start off early April. She'll get ten furlongs to a mile and a half and is hopefully an Oaks filly."
