Fierce Impact, Australia’s joint champion miler in 2019-20 and three-time Group 1 winner, has retired to stud, trainer Matthew Smith has announced.

“He’s been an absolute star for us, it will be sad to see him leave the stable but we’re safe in the knowledge that he retires perfectly sound and well,” said Smith.

Victoria’s Leneva Park have recently bought a significant stake in the son of Deep Impact and syndicated him for stud duties.

“It would have been great to see him on the track for a couple more runs, but to be honest we are still on cloud nine having secured a horse of his quality, we can’t wait to welcome him home to Leneva Park,” said general manager Mick Sharkie.

“Victorian breeders will have access to a racehorse that counts as one of Deep Impact’s top five all time performers. Fierce Impact won at two and trained on to win three Group 1 mile races, he was super tough, classy and is everything the Aussie market demands.”

Originally trained by David Simcock in Britain, Fierce Impact won on his only start at two and was second behind Khalidi in the Listed Cocked Hat Stakes at Goodwood the following term.

He was sold to Smith for 120,000gns at the Tattersalls Horses in Training Sale that October and landed his first top-level win when striking in the Toorak Handicap at Caulfield in October 2019.

Fierce Impact’s 2021 fee will be announced in coming weeks.
