Havana Grey became the latest first-season sire to notch a maiden success as his daughter Star Of Lady M landed the seasonal curtain-raiser at Redcar.

Standing at Whitsbury Manor Stud, this year for £6,000, the son of Havana Gold won the Molecomb Stakes before finishing second to Karl Burke stablemate Unfortunately in the Prix Morny.

Havana Grey went on to Group 1 glory himself in the following year's Flying Five at the Curragh and had already fielded four offspring in the early juvenile events from a crop of well over 100.

David O'Meara's Star Of Lady M, also bred by Whitsbury Manor, was not unfancied in the betting but was up against an odds-on favourite in the Brocklesby runner-up Primrose Ridge.

Those two had it between themselves for most of the race, with the grey finding more than her still green looking rival to win by three-quarters of a length.

Star Of Lady M was bought for 15,000gns by Lillingston Bloodstock at Book 3 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale. She is a half-sister to minor winner Aye Catcher out of a winning Street Cry mare from the family of the brilliant Fantastic Light.
