Harry Angel off the mark as Vicious Harry makes light work of Chantilly rivals

Vicious Harry became Darley first-season sire and champion sprinter Harry Angel's first winner when running out a clear-cut victor of the Coq Chantant Stakes at Chantilly on Tuesday.

The length and a half-winning two-year-old was bred by Medya Sarl and Tarik Tekce and sold to MAB Agency for €28,000 at Arqana's October Yearling Sale last autumn.

Now sporting the colours of Cuadra Mediterraneo, Vicious Harry is out of the Encosta De Lago mare Umneeyatee, who is a half-sister to the South African Grade 2-winning Amanee, a daughter of Pivotal, and Jadeer, a Listed-placed son by Fastnet Rock, and two other minor winners.

The trio are in turn out of the Niarchos homebred Moon Is Up, a stakes-winning daughter of Woodman and the hugely influential blue hen Miesque, therefore making her a half-sister to top-class miler and then sire Kingmambo, French Guineas and Oaks heroine East Of The Moon and Group 3 winner and Prix Maurice de Gheest runner-up Miesque's Son among five black-type winners or performers.

Harry Angel himself broke his maiden tag on his second start at two when winning the Mill Reef Stakes at Newbury for Clive Cox, having been bought by the trainer for £44,000 at the previous year's DBS Premier Yearling Sale when offered by Ballyphilip Stud.

The son of Dark Angel, who was privately purchased by Godolphin after a convincing win in the Sandy Lane Stakes at Haydock, was second in the Commonwealth Cup before putting the July Cup on his CV that summer.

The colt added the Sprint Cup to his growing record, while he also won the following year's Duke of York Stakes and finished his career when second in the British Champions Sprint Stakes.

Having taken up stallion duties for a fee of £20,000 in 2019, the champion sprinter has had three further placed runners to date with his first crop of juveniles. He stood this term for £12,500.
