Godolphin's Group 1-winning globe-trotter Kutub dies at 22
Son of In The Wings carried the royal blue silks with distinction
Kutub, a globe-trotting multiple Group 1 winner for Godolphin, died recently due to the infirmities of old age. He was 22.
The son of In The Wings was a 220,000gns Tattersalls Houghton yearling purchase by Shadwell and was sent to France to be trained by Freddy Head for Hamdan Al Maktoum, for whom he won the Prix Noailles and finished second in the Prix Lupin and fourth in the Prix du Jockey Club.
Kutub later joined Godolphin and was sent out by Saeed Bin Suroor to win three Group 1 races at four – the Grosser Dallmayr-Preis and Preis von Europa in Germany and the Gran Premio del Jockey Club in Italy – as well as the Singapore Gold Cup, all under Frankie Dettori.
He retired at the end of his five-year-old season as the winner of six of his 16 starts and having banked more than £750,000 in prize-money.
Kutub originally stood at Haras du Thenney in France before stints at Clongiffen Stud in Ireland and Batsford Stud in Britain, before covering his final books at Girsonfield Stud in the north of England and returning to Shadwell last year.
Kutub's best progeny were Abu Dhabi Group 3 winner Topclas and Listed scorers Superstition and Terre Du Vent, the last-named mare the dam of this season's smart two-year-old Owney Madden.
He arguably fared better in the jumps sphere, where his leading lights were the Grade 1-placed chaser Notus De La Tour and Red Rum Handicap Chase winner Katachenko.
Kutub was bred in partnership by the late Elizabeth Burke's Stackallan Stud and the Rogers family's Airlie Stud, out of the winning Habitat mare Minnie Habit.
