French-based Deep Impact stallion Martinborough bags first winner at Dieppe
Central Park West does the business for Haras de Grandcamp's sire
Martinborough, the only son of Deep Impact at stud in France, sired his first winner when Central Park West landed the Prix Claude Monet on his debut over five and a half furlongs at Dieppe on Monday.
Trained by Jean Dubois and ridden by Pierre-Charles Boudot, the gelding saw the trip out well to wear down the Andrew Hollinshead-trained Oneonechop.
From the late Deep Impact’s first crop of foals, Martinborough was a dual Grade 3 winner over ten furlongs, earning a peak Racing Post Rating of 112. The Northern Farm-bred raced until the age of seven, retiring to Haras de Grandcamp at €4,000, a fee which he remains on this year.
Martinborough is a full-brother to a Group winner in Japan and a half-brother to the dam of Grade 1-winning Deep Impact fillies Verxina and Vivlos, the latter named champion older female miler in 2017 for winning the Dubai Turf on Dubai World Cup night. Their three-parts brother Cheval Grand won the 2017 running of the Japan Cup.
Champion sire Deep Impact, a seven-time Grade 1 winner who contested the 2006 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, was all-conquering at stud in Japan, much like his sire Sunday Silence. He has sired an incredible nine per cent Group winners to runners, totalling 127. Of those Group winners, 46 have won at Group 1 level - the latest being the unbeaten and hugely exciting Contrail, who authoritatively won the Group 1 Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby) on May 31.
Britain and Ireland boast two 2018 Classic-winning sons of Deep Impact at stud through 2,000 Guineas winner Saxon Warrior and Prix du Jockey Club victor Study Of Man, residing at Coolmore and Lanwades Stud respectively.
Germany, Italy and Sweden also boast sons of the phenomenal sire at stud, while Batsford Stud stood Group 2 winner Danon Ballade for one season in 2017, before he returned to Japan.
Martinborough’s handful of yearlings made up to €25,000, averaging almost €10,000. He has 49 two-year-olds to run for him this year.
