A 'free' horse will be among the prizes in the £200,000 Goffs UK Premier Yearling Stakes at York's Ebor meeting.

The initiative - which is offered in association with York and Theault Horseboxes - will see winning connections receive a voucher from Goffs UK to use at the Premier or Silver Yearling Sales the following week.

The voucher can be spent on a yearling with a value equal to the previous year’s average price at the Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale, which in 2020 was £34,007. The winning trainer will also receive a free six-month lease of a two-stall horsebox from Theault.

Winning owners will receive owners' badges, lunch and a bottle of champagne for up to six people on a raceday at York within the year.

Goffs UK managing director Tim Kent said: “We are always looking at ways to promote ownership and broaden the appeal of racing, and the idea behind the Premier prizes is to offer something different – something you could not get anywhere else.

"Offering the winning connections of our Premier Yearling Stakes a free horse is something unique to Goffs and the Doncaster Premier Yearling Sale.

“The exciting new initiative offers more than just money and rewards both owners and trainers for their success at York while keeping the dream alive for future years. Group 1 winners, Classic winners and Royal Ascot winners can all be bought at the Premier Sale and we hope the free horse will be fulfilling these dreams for new connections in 2022 and beyond."

He continued: “We would like to extend a big thank you to our sponsors, Theault, who will be offering the winning trainer a free six-month lease of one of their outstanding two-stall horse boxes, and of course York racecourse, who have been big supporters of our time-honoured sales race for many years and have kindly provided a hospitality package for the winning owners.”

William Derby, chief executive and clerk of the course at York, added: “We're proud of our partnership with Goffs UK, which stretches back over 15 years and has seen horses such as Wootton Bassett pass through the Premier Yearling Sale and on to victory in this race on the Knavesmire.

"We hope this wonderful prize will add tremendous interest and value to owners entered in the race. We look forward to hopefully seeing the yearling return to York the following year for the 2022 renewal of this race.”
