Freddy Tylicki instrumental in success of Italian Derby scorer Tuscan Gaze
Bloodstock agent sourced the Galileo colt for owners Mag Racing Srl
Freddy Tylicki enjoyed his first major success as a bloodstock agent when Tuscan Gaze landed the €704,000 Italian Derby at Capannelle on Sunday, having sourced the Galileo colt for owners Mag Racing Srl two weeks ago.
Tuscan Gaze had a progressive profile in the lead-up to the Group 2 having won both his races his previous trainer John Gosden in the ownership of the Coolmore partners and Lady Bamford.
"This is my first big winner as an agent and it's tremendous," said Tylicki, the 34-year-old former jockey who is also a pundit for Sky Sports Racing, ambassador for Irish National Stud Racing and patron for the Inspire Foundation.
"I had him on my radar after he won his novice race at Newbury quite nicely. He's a Galileo out of a Rainbow Quest mare in Crystal Gaze, which suggested he'd continue to improve.
"An Italian friend of mine rang me on behalf of Mag Horse Racing Srl, the new syndicate for this horse, around the time of Royal Ascot asking me to find them a horse for the Italian Derby.
"I got in touch with Jamie Moriarty, the racing manager at Coolmore, and enquired to see if this horse was for sale. I know Jamie quite well simply because we used to be apprentices together at Richard Fahey's. Everything went straightforward, and it was a pleasure dealing with Jamie and Coolmore. The rest is history.
"I'm absolutely delighted for Mag Racing Srl, the trainer Mr Bietolini, and Coolmore - they've sold several good horses in training down through the years, and I'm really grateful that they put their trust in me.
"I'm delighted to have found something which I put a lot of time and effort into, and it is within the industry.
"It's a completely different ball game having to look up pedigrees, view the conformation of horses and going to the sales, but it's taken my interest quite a lot."
Tuscan Gaze is the second son of Galileo to win the Italian Derby after the 2008 scorer Cima De Triomphe, while the sire's first-crop son Rockmaster achieved a podium finish in 2006.
The winner was given a well-timed ride by Carlo Fiocchi for trainer Luciano Bietolini, getting up on the line to deny the Mark Johnston-trained and Frankie Dettori-ridden King's Caper, a son of Galileo stallion New Approach. The Mastercraftsman colt Masterwin took third, while Andrew Balding's raider, Nathaniel's son Papa Power, finished ninth of the 13 runners.
King's Caper - owned by one of Johnston's successful Kingsley Park syndicates - was the more experienced of the first three home having brought up a hat-trick as a juvenile, culminating in success in a Class 2 conditions stakes at Chelmsford last August.
Tylicki also landed a nice pinhooking touch when a Lawman colt he purchased for 28,000gns as a yearling was sold on to budding trainer Kevin Philippart De Foy for 72,000gns through CH Thoroughbreds at the Tattersalls Guineas Breeze-Up Sale last week.
Tuscan Gaze was bred by Coolmore and Daylesford Stud out of the high-class producer Crystal Gaze, who also has a yearling colt by Commonwealth Cup hero and Scat Daddy stallion Caravaggio.
The Rainbow Quest mare was sold in foal to Frankel, with a colt foal by the sire at foot, for £1.15 million at the inaugural Goffs London Sale in 2014 when she was purchased by MV Magnier.
Crystal Gaze, who was previously owned by Roy and Belinda Strudwick's Ballygallon Stud, has produced a remarkable ten winners to date, with her runners headed by the Group 2-winning sprinters Caspian Prince and Spirit Quartz.
Her daughter Contrary, by Mark Of Esteem, is carving out her own reputation as a fine broodmare as the dam of Hong Kong champion stayer Exultant, who was third to Churchill in the Irish 2,000 Guineas in 2017 when racing under the name Irishcorrespondent.
