Best Solution: Godolphin globe-trotter sires his first stakes winner

Gestut Lunzen's Best Solution sired his first stakes winner at Cologne on Sunday when his second-crop daughter Goldaue won the Listed Winterkonigin Trial on the Preis von Europa undercard for an international cast of owners.

Five years to the day since the triple Group 1 winner by Kodiac ran for the final time, in the Group 1 which is the centrepiece of this meeting, his two-year-old daughter maintained her unbeaten record in the seven-and-a-half-furlong contest, her first race in the colours of Gary Barber and Team Valor.

Bred by Gestut Auenquelle, for whom she made a winning debut at Muhlheim last month, the chestnut continues to represent Torquator Tasso's Arc-winning trainer and jockey Marcel Weiss and Rene Piechulek even after her sale by the Group 1 winner's owner.

Goldaue is the sixth named foal produced by Gondola, Auenquelle's Lando half-sister to the Group 2 Prix Noailles winner Grandcamp and to the Listed Prix Melisande winner Piana.

Gondola has provided Team Valor with two Listed winners; Go Rose her 2015 daughter of Soldier Hollow won a Listed contest at Hanover and was third to Nyaleti in the Group 2 German 1,000 Guineas.

Under the pair's fourth dam are a host of influential Group 1 winners, including Classic winners Fame And Glory and Legatissimo, as well as Gonbarda and Farhh.

Best Solution was bred by Cecil and Martin McCracken and, despite being a son of noted speed influence Kodiac, excelled at middle-distance trips, with a Group 1 hat-trick at five in the Grosser Preis von Berlin, Grosser Preis von Baden and Caulfield Cup for Godolphin.

His younger full-brother El Bodegon won the Group 1 Criterium de Saint Cloud and was placed in the Prix du Jockey Club and Grand Prix de Paris.

The stamina influence of their outstanding Juddmonte female family dominates the genes. His dam Al Andalyya is a Kingmambo daughter of the Group 3 Noblesse Stakes third Kushnarenkova and she is a Sadler's Wells full-sister to St Leger winner Brian Boru and Park Express winner Kitty O'Shea, second dam of the Group 1 Prix de Royallieu winner Loving Dream. Another full-sister is Soviet Moon, the unraced dam of Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe and Derby hero Workforce.

Kushnarenkova is also a half-sister to the Group 2 winner and sire Sea Moon and Group 2 winner Moon Search, dam of the Cheltenham Grade 1 winner Cinders And Ashes.

Best Solution retired to Gestut Lunzen for the 2020 breeding season and has around 45 members of his first crop. His second, which contains a similar number, has provided him with his best progeny, both of whom were bred by Gestut Auenquelle.

Last month's Group 3 Zukunfts Rennen third Turf Sumy is also trained by Weiss and had Piecheluk in the saddle at Baden-Baden.
