Exciting Makaloun continues fine autumn for Bated Breath

Makaloun looked a son of Bated Breath capable of taking his career to the highest level as he became the stallion's tenth Group winner to date in the Prix de Conde at Chantilly.

Although Banstead Manor's resident was a top-class sprinter himself and his best progeny have been known to be sharper types, the influence of the Aga Khan's stout damlines have made Makaloun look much more of a middle-distance candidate.

He took his juvenile record to four from four with a particularly smooth performance over nine furlongs and heavy ground, eventually pulling five lengths away from the front of the field.

Carrying the green Aga Khan silks, the Jean-Claude Rouget-trained colt seems to have inherited some stamina from his dam Makana, a daughter of Dalakhani who won over a mile and seven and has produced two other minor winners.

Bated Breath had a good time of it later last season, advertised particularly by Daayeh winning the Rockfel at Newmarket before taking second in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf and Space Traveller collecting the Group 2 Solonaway Stakes at Leopardstown.

The autumn has been encouraging once again as his Juddmonte owned and bred daughter Viadera made her breakthrough for Chad Brown in landing the Noble Damsel Stakes at Belmont Park over the weekend.
