Australia’s sprinters have had a huge impact in Europe. In 2003, Choisir became the first Australian-trained horse to win in the UK. He did so by creating further history in winning the King’s Stand and Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot in the same week – a feat not replicated until Blue Point did the same double last year.

Just three years later, Takeover Target would capture the hearts of racing fans by winning the King’s Stand Stakes. He was owned and trained by Joe Janiak, a former taxi driver and cost just A$1,250 before going on to earn over A$6 million in prize-money.

Australia’s racing programme has been geared towards speed for quite some time, so it is little wonder that the country has become adept at producing some of the world’s best sprinters.
