Dwan hoping Altior factor pays off for three-parts brother at Derby Sale
The Tattersalls Ireland Derby Sale, which gets underway on Wednesday, will afford buyers the opportunity to source some of the most promising National Hunt prospects around and one horse sure to garner plenty of attention is a a Milan three-parts brother (Lot 462) to outstanding chaser Altior.
The gelding will be offered by John Dwan's Ballyreddin Stud, who secured him at the Tattersalls Ireland November National Hunt Sale back in 2015, prior to Altior's victory in the Grade 2 Supreme Trial Novices' Hurdle at Cheltenham.
Nicky Henderson's superstar went on to bag a host of Grade 1 contests, including this year's Champion Chase at Cheltenham, and on what attracted him to his younger sibling, Dwan said:"He was a nice scopey foal who had a good walk and by a stallion that I've had success from over the years.
"Altior had racked up a few wins by that time and he looked like a horse who could go on to great things - which he did."
During the years that the son of Milan has been in Dwan's care, Altior has gone from strength to strength and significantly boosted the appeal of the now three-year-old.
Dwan reports that the gelding has bloomed since joining his operation and added: "He's matured into a lovely horse. He's very correct and he's everything that I wanted him to turn out into."
With the sun shining down on the Tattersalls Ireland complex in County Meath, the Milan three-year-old had a busy day of showing on Tuesday.
"He's had a lot of viewings and he's a nice individual," said Dwan. "I'm hoping that all works out when he goes into the sales ring later this week."
