Danedream has her first winner as dam as son Faylaq fires at Ripon

Brilliant Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe and King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes heroine Danedream is off the mark as a broodmare.

Her first winner is her third foal Faylaq, and although the Dubawi colt broke his maiden at Ripon on Thursday by winning a five-runner Class 4 three-year-old handicap over 12 furlongs on his fourth start, the manner in which he did so – cruising clear a furlong from home and sauntering to a four and a half-length victory – suggested there is a lot more to come from him.

Faylaq is trained by William Haggas for Hamdan Al Maktoum after he was bought by Shadwell for 1,500,000gns from the draft of Newsells Park Stud, agent for the colt's breeder Teruya Yoshida, at Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale in 2017.

Danedream's first foal was the Frankel five-year-old mare Nothing But Dreams, who was in training with Roger Varian but never raced and was shipped to Japan last year to start her breeding career, and her second foal is the Frankel four-year-old colt Solid Dream, who has run unplaced in Japan.

The mare, now aged 11, has a two-year-old filly by Frankel named Dreaming Eyes and a yearling filly by the same sire. She delivered a Dubawi colt foal in March.

Danedream was sold by her breeders Gestut Brummerhof for just €9,000 as a two-year-old at the BBAG Spring Sale in 2010 but soon revealed herself to be worth many multiples of that price on the track.

Sent into training with Peter Schiergen for Gestut Burg Eberstein, she was multiple stakes placed at two and improved at three to win the Oaks d'Italia, Grosser Preis von Berlin, Grosser Preis von Baden and Arc, in which she beat a star-studded field that included Shareta, Snow Fairy, So You Think, St Nicholas Abbey, Sarafina, Workforce, Treasure Beach and Reliable Man.

Danedream held her form at four, when she added the King George and another Grosser Preis von Baden to her resume.

She is by Lomitas out of the unraced Danehill mare Danedrop, who after the daughter's rise to fame was sold privately to Coolmore and has subsequently produced Group winners Broadway and Venice Beach after being matched with Galileo.

Danedream has big shoes to fill as other female Arc winners have excelled at paddocks. Zarkava has a Group 1 winner to her name in Zarak, while Detroit's son Carnegie emulated his dam's victory in the Longchamp showpiece; then there is Urban Sea, considered one of the best broodmares of all time after producing Galileo and Sea The Stars.
