Coolmore pair Churchill and Highland Reel become first-time fathers

The first foals of Coolmore's multiple Group 1-winners Churchill and Highland Reel were born over the weekend.

The trailblazer for Churchill is a colt foal born at Wadacre Stud on Saturday. He is out of Trip To Glory, a dual Listed winner by Where Or When who has already produced four winners at paddocks.

“He’s a smashing colt, we are so pleased with him that we booked the mare back to Churchill straight away,” said Wadacre Stud's Jeanette Matthews-Griffiths. “He’s all quality.”

Churchill, a Galileo brother to top-class filly Clemmie, was Europe's champion two-year-old of 2016 after winning the National Stakes and Dewhurst in impressive fashion.

In the following season he won the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket and the Curragh and finished placed in the Juddmonte International and Queen Elizabeth II Stakes.

Churchill is standing his second season at Coolmore at a fee of €35,000.

The first foal by Highland Reel, born on Sunday morning at Haras de Saint-Julien, is a filly out of the maiden mare Sundene, a daughter of Zafeen.

Owner Antoinette Tamagni-Bodmer said: “She's a very nice filly foal indeed. We are thrilled she's the first foal by Highland Reel and the first of the season on my farm. We will be supporting Highland Reel again this year.”

Another well-bred son of Galileo, Highland Reel was a popular globetrotter, landing seven Group/Grade 1 contests across Europe, the US and Hong Kong.

He will command a fee of €17,500 in his second season standing at Coolmore.
