Shamardal joins Frankel on two winners with Galileo on the march
Juddmonte breeding continues to excel at the royal meeting
Frankel did not have any winners on the second day of Royal Ascot on Wednesday to add to the double he notched on Tuesday through Without Parole and Monarchs Glen, but he did manage a couple of place-getters – Prince of Wales's Stakes second Cracksman and Queen's Vase third Nelson – to consolidate his lead in the week's sire standings.
Hot on Frankel's heels, though, are Shamardal and his own sire Galileo.
Shamardal now has two winners at this year's royal meeting after daughter Aljazzi scorched to a wide-margin victory in the Duke of Cambridge Stakes for owner-breeders Saleh Al Homaizi and Imad Al Sagar.
She followed Blue Point, also by the Kildangan Stud stalwart, who mowed down Battaash to win the King's Stand Stakes on Tuesday.
Coolmore phenomenon Galileo meanwhile has a winner and two seconds thanks to Wednesday's Queen's Vase one-two Kew Gardens and Southern France and Tuesday's St James's Palace Stakes second Gustav Klimt.
ROYAL ASCOT SIRE STANDINGS AFTER DAY TWO
TWO WINNERS
Frankel (Without Parole-G1, Monarchs Glen-LR, also one second and one third)
Shamardal (Blue Point-G1, Aljazzi-G2)
ONE WINNER
Galileo (Kew Gardens-G2, also two seconds)
Delegator (Accidental Agent-G1)
Poet's Voice (Poet's Word-G1)
Camacho (Signora Cabello-G2)
Kingman (Calyx-G2)
Acclamation (Expert Eye-G3)
Footstepsinthesand (Lagostovegas-H'cap)
Rio De La Plata (Settle For Bay-H'cap)
The theme of Juddmonte bloodlines excelling at this year's royal meeting continued to the second day, with the operation recording a third homebred winner after Calyx and Monarchs Glen as Expert Eye bounced back to form in the Jersey Stakes.
He is by Rathbarry Stud flagship sire Acclamation out of a mare by retired Banstead Manor Stud stalwart Dansili.
Dansili has two third-place finishers to his name at Royal Ascot 2018, while one sire son, Delegator, supplied Queen Anne Stakes hero Accidental Agent and another, Zoffany, was represented by Duke of Cambridge Stakes third Wilamina.
A fine year for the Juddmonte-bred Camacho, who stands at Yeomanstown Stud, continued as Signora Cabello became his first Royal Ascot winner with a game success in the Queen Mary Stakes.
Camacho's half-brother Showcasing was the source of Tuesday's Coventry Stakes runner-up Advertise.
Rio De La Plata registered an appropriate first winner at Royal Ascot when Settle For Bay hacked up in the Royal Hunt Cup.
Settle For Bay is trained by David Marnane, whose brother Con, a leading light in the breeze-up field, bought triple Group 1 winner Rio De La Plata for $75,000 at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale and resold him to Godolphin for 170,000gns as a two-year-old at Tattersalls.
Rio De La Plata, who stands at Haras du Logis in Normandy for just €5,000, extends the good run for budget sires at Royal Ascot this year.
The late Delegator and Poet's Voice – sires of the winners of two of the most prestigious events this week in Accidental Agent and Poet's Word – were advertised at £6,000 and £4,000 before they died prematurely.
Camacho was available for just €7,500 in 2018, while Footstepsinthesand, father of Tuesday's Ascot Stakes winner Lagostovegas, was pitched at €10,000 at Coolmore.
