Like father, like son! Kingman's Calyx cruises in Coventry Stakes
First stakes winner for Juddmonte's son of Invincible Spirit
Four years ago, Kingman lit up the opening day of the royal meeting when he showcased his devastating turn of foot to win the St James's Palace Stakes. This time around, it was his first-crop son Calyx who took centre stage with a brilliant win in the Coventry Stakes.
Only ten days after he exploded onto the scene at Newmarket's July course, Calyx evoked memories of his father as he burst clear off his rivals on the stands' side to become his sire's first stakes winner and set up the possibility that he could go one better than Kingman in the Qipco 2,000 Guineas come next spring.
Carrying the colours of Khalid Abdullah, Calyx's victory was Juddmonte through and through, with the colt being a fourth-generation homebred and also the first stakes winner out of his Group 3-winning dam Helleborine.
"Calyx is very talented," said his trainer, John Gosden. "His father was exceptionally talented and Calyx has all of those attributes. The high draw was a disadvantage and I couldn't believe that Calyx hung on like he did. It was a tough ordeal for him to race on his own on just his second start. If he had horses to race with him, I think that would have been better.
"We've won this race before but he does make you get up in the morning. I had to give him a bit of time. His father never ran until July whereas this boy has been out in June."
