Invincible Spirit supplies another star speedster in Eqtidaar
Sheikh Hamdan's homebred scorches to victory in the Commonwealth Cup
The Irish National Stud's flagship sire Invincible Spirit notched his 16th individual Group/Grade 1 winner as son Eqtidaar stormed home to take the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot on Friday.
Invincible Spirit has a fine record at the royal meeting, having also supplied the likes of Kingman (St James's Palace Stakes) and Profitable (King's Stand Stakes), as well as Fleeting Spirit, Moonlight Cloud and Signs Of Blessing, who have all been placed in Group 1 sprints at Ascot.
He was also responsible for the third home in the Commonwealth Cup, Emblazoned, while the runner-up Sands Of Mali is by the unheralded French stallion Panis.
Invincible Spirit – who stood at a fee of €120,000 this year – has a burgeoning reputation as a sire of sires and the debut juvenile crop of his son Kingman yielded Tuesday's impressive Coventry Stakes hero Calyx.
The Sir Michael Stoute-trained Eqtidaar is a homebred for his owner Hamdan Al Maktoum and is the third foal out of the Acclamation mare Madany, a dual winner over 6f at two who finished second in the Tattersalls 3yo Million Sprint and fifth in the Pavilion Stakes at three.
Madany is emerging as one of Sheikh Hamdan's most exciting young broodmares, as Hungerford Stakes winner and 2,000 Guineas runner-up Massaat (by Teofilo) was her first foal and Kempton maiden scorer Hathiq (Exceed And Excel) was her second.
The dam has a two-year-old colt by Kodiac called Baraajeel, no yearling but a colt foal by Muhaarar – another Commonwealth Cup winner for Sheikh Hamdan – born March 12.
Madany is a half-sister to Listed winner Zeiting, who produced three Group winners at stud – Combat Zone, Royal Empire and Scottish – as well as Group 3-placed Zut Alors, the dam of last season's Poule d'Essai des Pouliches heroine Precieuse.
Eqtidaar makes some stallion prospect for Sheikh Hamdan's Shadwell operation, with Invincible Spirit and Acclamation both important influences in the stallion ranks.
Acclamation has got on the scoreboard as a sire in his own right at Royal Ascot this week through Jersey Stakes winner Expert Eye.
