Broodmares being offered at the Tattersalls February Sale this week are well worth a second look given the auction's reputation for selling Classic or Group 1-producing dams.
Frequential, the dam of last year's Irish Derby hero and Arc third Los Angeles, was picked up for 48,000gns by BBA Ireland at the sale in 2017 as an unraced three-year-old from the draft of Godolphin, while the dam of fellow 2024 Classic star Metropolitan went for even less from the same source. Like Frequential, Alianza was an unraced filly at the start of her three-year-old season when she made just 800gns to Stuart McPhee two years earlier.
Jawlaat, the dam of last year's Dubai Turf scorer and Saudi Cup possible Facteur Cheval, sold to McCracken Farms for 18,000gns from Shadwell's draft in 2016. She too was unraced and had just turned three when going through the ring at Park Paddocks.
There are some particularly well-bred mares on offer at Park Paddocks once again. Among them is Barton Sales' Divisimo (lot 63), a Dansili sister to Matron Stakes winner Emulous. More recently, Emulous became the dam of last year's Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe scorer Bluestocking.
Another of her full-sisters, Listed Criterium de Vitesse winner Daring Diva, is the second dam of Juddmonte's Kentucky Derby and Haskell Stakes winner Mandaloun. Daring Diva is also the second dam of Group 3 Oh So Sharp Stakes winner Merrily, who holds Classic entries this year.
Far Westfield Farm offers the Listed-placed Galileo mare Facade (18), a sister to recent stakes winner Lily Hart and in foal to the exciting Study Of Man.
Another choice offering is Hazelwood Bloodstock's Propel (29), a Dubawi half-sister to three Group winners from the family of champion L’Ancresse. The 13-year-old is the dam of two winners and is carrying to promising young sire and champion juvenile Pinatubo.

Godolphin's draft is always one to watch, particularly as the source of the aforementioned Classic-producers and this year it contains black-type performer Valdivara (133), a four-year-old daughter of Blue Point out of a sister to Territories; Wedding Band (135), an unraced daughter of Lope De Vega and the top-class Wuheida; Scarlet Princess (134), a Kingman daughter of Group 1 winner Lady Marian and half-sister to Group 2 Grand Prix de Deauville and Dubai City Of Gold scorer Loxley; plus dual Listed-winning and Group 3-placed Australia gelding Galashiels (124).
This is a time where owners and trainers might be thinking about supplementing their squad for the next phases of the Flat racing calendar.
Among the notable horses in training is Juddmonte's Fire Demon (108), a winner on All-Weather Championships finals day last March, and a half-brother to Australian Group 2 winner Old Flame and Tabiti, successful in last season's Group 3 Dick Poole Stakes. There is also the classy Imperial Fighter (187), who was third to Native Trail in the 2022 Irish 2,000 Guineas.
Another with proven stakes form in the catalogue is dual Group 3 scorer Roberto Escobarr (226), who is offered from trainer Ian Williams' draft.
Barton Sales consigns The Outlaw (192), a three-year-old colt by New Bay who bolted up at Chelmsford recently for Ralph Beckett and is closely related to Listed Flying Fillies' Stakes winner Stormy Girl while trainer Ed Walker sends three-year-old Night Of Thunder filly Sorbus (268) who won at Kempton a fortnight ago on her second start. The last two named horses are strong examples of those with a recent catalogue update.
The inaugural Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) Showcase will take place at 11am on the opening day of the sale, with the stallion parade following on from the showcase.
The showcase features nine retrained racehorses who have excelled in a variety of equestrian disciplines, including Cheltenham Gold Cup hero Native River, fellow Grade 1-winning chaser Kalashnikov, Godolphin's former Meydan Group 1 scorer Blair House and the late Queen's high-class Barbers Shop.

Stallions set to parade are A'Ali (Newsells Park Stud), Bangkok (Chapel Stud), Bradsell (National Stud), Caturra (Overbury Stud), El Caballo (Culworth Grounds Farm), Isaac Shelby (Newsells Park Stud), Lope Y Fernandez (National Stud), Stradivarius (National Stud) and Ubettabelieveit (Mickley Stud).
A'Ali, Bangkok, Lope Y Fernandez and Ubettabelieveit are set for a big year with their first crop having just turned two.
Industry organisations including the European Breeders’ Fund, British Racing School, RoR, TB-Ed and the National Stud will also have exhibition displays in the Lower Sale Ring Bar with hospitality provided courtesy of the British EBF until 1pm.
Tattersalls chairman Edmond Mahony said of the showcase and parade: "The Retraining of Racehorses charity is a vitally important asset to the British racing and bloodstock industries and we hope the new RoR Showcase at Tattersalls will celebrate both the talents and successes of former racehorses in their second careers, in addition to increasing awareness of the crucial role played by RoR in ensuring their welfare.
"The stallion parade of young British-based sires has been a staple attraction at the Tattersalls February Sale for many years and the day will provide an opportunity to showcase many important aspects of the bloodstock industry to breeders and racing and equestrian enthusiasts alike."
British EBF chairman Simon Sweeting, who will bring Caturra to the stallion parade, added: "The British EBF’s £2 million annual contribution to racing’s prize-money is funded, in the main, by British stallions. When Tattersalls approached us about their plans for the parade, it made perfect sense for us to support and be associated with it.
"It's a great opportunity for breeders to see new horses such as the National Stud’s Bradsell and stallions from a bit further afield such as Ubettabelieveit, El Caballo and Bangkok.”
The sale gets under way from midday on Thursday and 10am on Friday. The catalogue can be viewed here.
