Another proud sporting moment for Hearn family as Subjectivist strikes Gold

It is usually Barry Hearn or his son Eddie who assume central positions across the sporting stage but the Matchroom promoter was happy to allow his wife Susan to take the limelight after the Gold Cup.

Susan Hearn's Mascalls Stud in Essex was responsible for the new staying champion Subjectivist, who is part of a happy family association that has been built up with Mark Johnston.

The Teofilo-sired colt is a three-parts brother to Sir Ron Priestley, the recent Jockey Club Stakes winner bound for Saturday's Hardwicke.

Dr Jim Walker, who owns Subjectivist after he was bought for 62,000gns by Johnston at Tattersalls Book 2, also has their Muhaarar half-sister Alba Rose, who earned black type in last year's Rockfel Stakes.

"It was so exciting," said Susan Hearn, who also bred Urban Fox, winner of the Pretty Polly Stakes at the Curragh in 2018, from a band of around eight broodmares.

"I felt sick, I always feel sick when my horses are running, it’s a horrible feeling but I can’t believe how easily he did that. It’s a shame we sold him, but there you go!

"People say to me, 'But you only bred him, that’s nothing' but to me that’s everything. It’s just a wonderful feeling."

Her equally delighted husband also told ITV Racing: "To be fair, she’s had 30 years of being an overnight success. The amount of work that goes into it that people don’t see behind the scenes, getting up late at night and again in the morning, having a disaster here or there, but sticking to it.

"Having the character to stand your ground and say, 'I love this business, I love the horses that I breed' and then she watches something like that.

"The mare, Reckoning, is throwing out winner after winner, Sir Ron runs on Saturday, Alba Rose is coming out very soon, we’ve got the two-year-old with Mark Johnston and I’m very proud of her. She’s had the nerve to stick in with what is a very tough game and days like today make it all worthwhile."
