Adam Kirby on hand to see first yearlings come up for auction

Group 1-winning jockey Adam Kirby was on hand to see his first yearlings sell at auction during the opening session of the Goffs UK September Sale on Tuesday.

As well as managing a busy schedule in the saddle – he has piloted six winners in the past 14 days – Kirby and his partner Megan Evans run Vicarage Farm in Kirtling near Newmarket, which also prepares and consigns youngstock on behalf of outside breeders.

The couple sent into the ring a March-foaled Es Que Love colt, who is the first foal out of the Shamardal mare Candleberry, and an April-born Lethal Force filly who is the second produce of Mylaporyours, a juvenile winner by Jeremy.

Kirby holds nominations in both stallions, having partnered Es Que Love to win the Lennox Stakes at Glorious Goodwood in 2014 and Lethal Force when he completed the Diamond Jubilee Stakes-July Cup double in 2013.

"We think the world of the Es Que Love colt," said Kirby, as he was inspecting yearlings in the holding ring outside.

"He's got that bit of fire in his belly, is a nice stamp of a horse and from a family that improves with time.

"The Lethal Force is a nice filly but still has a bit of growing to do. She's got clean legs, a nice walk and a good attitude. Hopefully she can go on and do something.

"Every breeder probably thinks their ducks could be swans but we're hoping there's a nice one among them."

The Es Que Love colt proved popular on what was a challenging day of trade and was hammered down for £16,000 to Richard Spencer, who produced Rajasinghe to win the Coventry Stakes in 2017, while Shaun Keightley acquired the Lethal Force filly for £5,000.

Four mares reside at Vicarage Farm, with two of those back in foal to sprinters who triumphed at the highest level under Kirby.

Candleberry – who has a Night Of Thunder colt at foot - was covered this year by Profitable, who strung together three Pattern wins under Kirby in 2016 culminating in success in the King's Stand Stakes.

Espagnolette – an Oasis Dream sister to the dam of Albany Stakes scorer Daahyeh – paid a visit to Harry Angel, the July Cup and Haydock Sprint Cup star who was partnered on all his starts by Kirby, having delivered a colt by Prix Jean Prat scorer Territories in the spring.

Mylaporyours, meanwhile, was rested after delivering her second foal by Lethal Force, a colt, in April.

"Megan does an amazing job looking after the horses, in addition to being a mum, and we've got a good team at Vicarage Farm," added Kirby. "It's something we're enjoying and hopefully we can get a bit of luck with it."
