The 54th season of the European Pattern, brainchild of my long-time press colleague Peter Willett, reached its conclusion with the running of the St Leger Italiano in Milan on November 23.

Four-year-old filly Taany proved victorious, becoming the 314th individual winner in a series comprising 416 races, one fewer than in 2023.

For 1971, its inaugural year, the scheme included 244 races, divided in three groups among Britain (98), France (96), Italy (28) and Ireland (22).
