Gestut Gorlsdorf have been committed to supporting their homebred Deutsches Derby winner Sea The Moon from the get-go at Lanwades Stud and his influence is strongly felt in their herd, coming through multiple generations now.

The son of Sea The Stars made his presence felt in the upper tiers of the BBAG October Sale with his daughters in particular proving extremely popular with buyers late into the German night.

Gorsldorf's homebred Sea The Moon fillies filled the top three positions on the table and were the only horses to sell for more than €50,000 during Friday evening's first session of the October Sale.

The most expensive arrived four lots from the end of the session and narrowly missed out on being the first six-figure sale of the auction, making €98,000 to Renello Bloodstock Agency.

It was a second trip across Germany from Gorlsdorf to Iffezheim for the filly who was unsold at €75,000 during the BBAG Yearling Sale six weeks ago but justified her breeders' faith in her on Friday night.

She is an unnamed full-sister to German joint-champion two and three-year-old Wonderful Moon, and a three-parts sister to Wonderful Boy, who won the Group 3 Herzog von Ratibor-Rennen for Gorlsdorf last year. His Listed-placed dam Wonderful Gorl is an Areion half-sister to Wonderful Moon and this filly.

They are out of Wonderful Filly, a winning Lomitas half-sister to Group 3 Prix Chloe winner and Group 1 Grosser Dallmayr Bayerisches Zuchtrennen third Wunder, by Adlerflug.

Second dam Wonderful World is a winning Dashing Blade full-sister to stakes winners Wonder Of Dashing, Wonderful Dreams and Winning Dash.

Earlier in the evening Quemoona, a full-sister to the multiple Group winner Quest The Moon, sold for €75,000 to J Albrecht from Gorlsdorf's draft.

Eight-year-old Quest The Moon has been demonstrating the class and soundness of both his pedigree and his sire throughout his career and his latest Group race success came earlier this month in the Group 3 Preis der Deutschen Einheit at Hoppegarten.

In seven seasons of racing for Sarah Steinberg and Stall Salzburg, Quest The Moon has won eight times with three of those victories coming this year and two of them in Group contests.

Quemoona and Quest The Moon are full-siblings of Dan Skelton's ill-fated Listed Wensleydale Juvenile Hurdle winner Medyaf.

They are out of Questabella, an unraced Rock Of Gibraltar full-sister to Listed Newmarket Stakes winner and Group 2 King Edward VII Stakes second Your Old Pal and a half-sister to Listed winner Quebello, by Sea The Moon.

Second dam Questabelle is an unraced Rainbow Quest daughter of Prix de l'Opera winner Bella Colora, who is a daughter of one of Meon Valley Stud's foundation mares — Reprocolor.

Gorlsdorf also consigned a three-parts sister to Listed winner Mercedes and she made €67,000 to Thomas Jander.

It was the second time the filly had been to a yearling sale, having been bought back for €50,000 at Arqana in August but given a little extra time she blossomed and added to her value.

The chestnut is a half-sister to Mercedes' dam, Group 2 Diana Trial winner Meergorl, and to the Listed-placed Mowe by Soldier Hollow. Already named Moona, the February-foaled filly is inbred to both Allegretta and Miswaki through Urban Sea and Tertullian, broodmare sire of her dam Mouette.

An ordinary winner, Mouette has produced four winner from six runners and is a half-sister to Group 2 Schwarzgold Rennen third Meridia and to the unraced Montezuma, dam of Adlerflug's Group 3 Prix du Lutece winner Moonshiner and it is the further family of Preis der Diana winner Miss Yoda, by Sea The Stars.

If Sea The Moon wasn't siring top lot contenders from Gorlsdorf, he was appearing as broodmare sire.

The farm offered the only yearling in the session by top-class stallion Oasis Dream and the filly, who is already named Blue Blue Sky, brought €43,000 from Holger Renz.

Inbred 2x4 to Green Desert through Oasis Dream and Sea The Moon, of whom Green Desert is grandsire, the filly is the second foal out of Baden Baden, an unraced daughter of Sea The Moon and Berlin Berlin, a Listed winner who was runner-up in the Group 1 Grosser Preis von Berlin for Heike Bischoff and Niko Lafrentz's farm.

Berlin Berlin is one of five black-type performers, headed by Group 2 Prix du Pomone winner Armure, out of Bombazine. The Listed John Musker Stakes third is a Generous half-sister to Classic winners Barathea and Gossamer, out of the Group 1 Prix de la Foret winner Brocade.

Triple Group 1 winner Best Solution hit the headlines last month with his first stakes winner on the track courtesy of second-crop daughter Goldaue's success in the Listed Winterkonigin Trial, and ahead of her run in the Winterkonigin itself on Monday, a colt from the third crop of Gestut Lunzen's sire was the most expensive of his gender on Friday night.

Consigned by Gestut Rottgen, the half-brother to this season's Group 3 Dr Busch Memorial second and Group 3 Baden-Baden Derby Trial third New Emerald, by Protectionist, was bought for €46,000 by Miltcho Mintchev.

Even here there was a link to Gorlsdorf as the colt's dam, Nouvelle Gorl, was bred by Bischoff and Lafrentz and is a Soldier Hollow half-sister to New York City, by Sea The Moon, who was fourth in the Preis der Diana this season.

In this ring six weeks' ago, the first representatives of Gestut Rottgen's Deutsches Derby and Preis von Europa winner Windstoss were in huge demand; Windstoss's first yearlings to sell returned an average of €73,000, which is 18 times their covering fee. That trend continued on Friday evening when a Rottgen homebred colt sold for €28,000 to Salamon Corporation.

Named Gegenwind, he is the second foal out of Gemma Blu, a winning daughter of Mastercraftsman and Listed winner Goiana.

The Oasis Dream mare is a half-sister to Grade 3 Regret Stakes third Gavea, by Gleneagles, and their dam, the aforementioned Goiana, is a half-sister to Listed winners Gualana and Wolf Country out of the Group 3 winner Goathemala.

Windstoss is a son of Shirocco and the celebrated broodmare Wellenspiel who foaled back-to-back winners of the Deutsches Derby with Weltstar emulating his half-brother Windstoss a year later. The daughter of Sternkonig is also the dam of the Group 3 winner and Group 1 Preis von Europa second Well Disposed by Dubawi.

The horses in training section which began the auction was topped by a gelding from the first crop of Derby winner Masar, who made €18,000 to MG Bloodstock and was the final lot in that segment.

Offered by his owner-breeder Gestut Ravensberg, Wintervogel has run twice this season at Compiegne for trainer Carmen Bocksai who is based alongside the BBAG sales complex and the racecourse at Iffezheim.

Fourth on both occasions, most recently last Friday, he comes from Ravensberg's iconic W family that is laden with household names.

The three-year-old is a half-brother to Group 3 Dr Busch Memorial winner Winterfuchs, by Campanologist, and to Wonder Of Lips, a daughter of Champs Elysees who was third in the Group 1 Preis der Diana. Sold to Japan as a broodmare prospect, she has produced Satono Strasse by Just A Way who was third to Shin Emperor in the Group 3 Kyoto Nisai Stakes last November.

Wintervogel is out of Wunderblume, an unraced Lomitas full-sister to the Listed-placed Wurfspiel who is the dam of Grade 1 Man O'War Stakes winner Wakeforest and second dam of Camelot's Group 1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud-winning daughter Wonderment.

Wunderblume is also a half-sister to Group 2 winner Wurftaube who is the dam of Deutsches Derby winner Waldpark, second dam of St Leger winner and rising National Hunt stallion Masked Marvel and third dam of Arc hero and young sire Waldgeist.

The sale continues on Saturday, with the second and final session commencing at 10am local time (9am BST).
