High Chaparral's legacy continues as Dundeel grabs his first stakes winner

The untimely loss of High Chaparral was felt closely in the southern hemisphere yesterday, with the late Coolmore stallion siring two new stakes winners.

The brace of victories was headed by his three-year-old daughter Hiyaam's win in the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes at Rosehill, while across the water in New Zealand three-year-old gelding Sherrif stepped up to take the Group 3 Manawatu Classic at Awapuni.

However, a new chapter in the High Chaparral story began when his multiple Group One-winning son Dundeel sired his first stakes winner yesterday, with the Michael, Wayne and John Hawkes-trained Irukandji landing The Schweppervescence at Rosehill.

Irukandji, who joins New Zealand winner Cutadeel as the sire's other stakes winner, will now be aimed at the Group 1 ATC Sires' Produce Stakes next weekend.

"It's pretty tempting. He can genuinely run the 1400 metres and he might run further," co-trainer Michael Hawkes said.

"He had a bit of a horrid run but Corey (Brown, jockey) didn't panic at the top of the straight, he kept a lap full of horse and he was able to kick halfway up the straight and get the job done.

"He's a lovely type and improving all the time. He's another colt who's going to go to stud. I know Arrowfield will be pretty happy. It's their first stakes winner for Dundeel."

Dundeel won ten races of his 19 starts including six at Group 1 level, and he stood at Arrowfield Stud in the Hunter Valley for a fee of $27,500 (inc GST) in 2017.
