A look at the Longines World's Best Racehorse Rankings is the best way to cheer up a Flat fan in these darkest of months. The first part of next year could see at least one clash, if not two or three, between the current number one and runaway Dubai World Cup hero Laurel River and Hong Kong's Romantic Warrior, arguably the people's champion who is being so sportingly targeted by Danny Shum towards the great prizes in the Middle East.
Via Sistina, who rose to joint second on the planet after her phenomenal Australian spring, could perhaps be returning to Europe if Chris Waller and Yulong are so bold. Calandagan, Rebel's Romance and Goliath will be around to challenge whichever members of the incoming Classic division come to the fore, and other Australians such as Switzerland and Storm Boy have Royal Ascot on their agenda.
The rankings do also serve to remind you what you've lost; highly rated stars of the last season such as City Of Troy, Charyn and Bluestocking now have breeding assignments ahead of them.
